Gold Coast heavy rock band CAKES has started the year with the release of their debut EP ‘Prescription Bugs’ consisting of seven peculiar, yet entertaining originals. They did an exceptional job of building their status and fan base in Queensland in 2017 with a massive year of non-stop gigging. Their distinct sound is so strange but intriguing, which is what makes this debut EP so impressive.
Honestly these guys can’t be classified under a certain genre, their blend of diverse guitar tones and techniques supported by vocals and banging drums bear no comparisons. However hints of Tool influences are noticeable through out the EP, as well as the grunt of Deftones and surprisingly Meshuggah come to mind on the final track ‘Excessive Flavouriser’. ‘Prescription Bugs’ commences with the heavy and progressive ‘Eucalyptus’ followed by the intricate, driving force of ‘Welcome to QLD’. Familiar songs ‘Break My Mode’ and ‘ILL’ from their 2017 two-track release also appear on their debut EP. The chorus into the outro during ‘ILL’ is one of the highlights of the EP; it manages to continuously build to end with an almighty climax. Personal favourites include ‘ILL’, ‘Sweat’ and ‘Excessive Flavouriser’.
CAKES make music that is difficult to comprehend while listening but in the end comes together to make total sense. All these odd elements combine perfectly to make this incredible music that makes them so original. What’s amazing about these guys is that although they’re only a duo, they easily cover the fullness of their sound live. Jake covers the duty of guitar and vocals remarkably well and Sam thrashes his drums to create the high energy required to drive each song. Be sure to get your hands ‘Prescription Bugs’ to hear a standout debut EP from some original Australian talent.
