Raindrop’s sound is something else. You could easily peg as psychedelic, but listening through this list of tunes you get to thinking it's something bigger. Flick through all 10 as you please and you'll hear that self-same feeling. It’s thick and emotional. Something which doesn’t sit easily within genre lines and always sounds like its coming from someplace else.
As Raindrop's mastermind Miles Devine would put it what catches his ear is the work of artists he thinks share a “strange approach to everything in life.” Not least of all is Pond’s visual artist Ben Montero, Tyler the Creator, Kendrick and father of funk Bootsy Collins himself. They all figure into it. A hard case to make on paper but the music doesn't lie.
RR: I feel a lot of these tracks have that same kind of dense – thick - production and downtempo vibrations which surface in your own music. What is it about these kinds of sounds which draws your ear?
Miles Devine: Well with hip-hop production as an example, if there’s a fat beat that has the right groove and tempo, I’ll fall in love with the song before even hearing the melody!
RR: Of all the names on this list who’s your biggest musical hero?
MD: Ben Montero, equally for both the art and music he creates. It connects with me in ridiculously personal ways that inspire me to be a better musician and person.
RR: A fair few collaborations too. Weird ones at that! In a cool way of course, but the idea of Bootsy Collins and Tyler the Creator working together with Kai or Thundercat with Kenny Loggins – it’s pretty far out. If you had your pick is there a particular artist you think you might find a similarly odd alchemy with?
MD: Tyler the Creator would be my first pick for sure. He seems like someone who would understand my strange approach to everything in life because he’s clearly crazy too. I also think we’d make some pretty sweet beats together.
RR: So you’ve got the new record, Mild Meltdowns, which just came out last Friday. What else can fans expect in the coming year?
MD: I’ve got a lot of songs written with a very different vibe to this record. If another track gets dropped this year some may not even think it’s Raindrop. I guess we’ll see…
