Gosh! Crikey! Wow! Amazing! New tunes from Byron’s Sunrose and Brisbane locals Fight Ibis are backing up a smouldering epic from The National’s forthcoming album. Cut Copy have sprung out of the ether with ‘Standing In The Middle of a Field’ and Ocean Alley have dropped a gut-wrenching ballad. We’ve even uncovered a sneaky new number from Ty Segall.
L.A. WITCH – BABY IN BLUE JEANS (SUCICDE SQUEEZE)
A trio hailing from California, L.A. Witch filter amphetamine fuelled garage punk through a Valium haze. This latest work adds a hint of dark and dirty blues to the group’s usual hard-riffing sound. Languid guitar licks float within layers of reverb-heavy vocals. Word is they may be touring the country soon so stay tuned for the announce.
FIGHT IBIS – NAZI ART (INDEPENDENT)
Goodtime garage funk from this relatively new Brisbane outfit. Served up with a side of heavy hitting fretwork and stomping rhythms there’s a grab bag of musical ideas floating around here. Despite the chaotic sonics and elastic time signatures it hangs together with effortless ease. Breezy and extremely danceable.
SUNROSE – FEVER (INDEPENDENT)
Going back to ‘60s, there’s something about surfing and psychedelia that Australians make completely their own. With ‘Fever’ Sunrose deliver their own take on catchy Surfadelica. Loaded with freak-out moments, there’s an alluring sense of spontaneity to this transportive jam. Veering in almost any sonic direction, it also plays well alongside the US East Coast vibrations of acts like The Growlers, Guantanamo Baywatch and The Allah-Lahs.
THE NATIONAL – CARIN AT THE LIQUOR STORE (REMOTE CONTROL/4AD)
With their latest string of singles, The National have transitioned form critic’s favourites to a chart-conquering force. Sure, there’s always a little to be lost on the march towards convention, but nonetheless Matt Berninger’s lurking baritone is hypnotic and seductive as ever. Within the track’s sombre simplicity courses an innocently seductive charm. Set atop the group’s atmospheric instrumentals and lyrical melancholia, ‘Carin’ showcases the group at the top of their game.

OCEAN ALLEY – THE COMEDOWN (Independent)
Is Ocean Alley really a psychedelic band? ‘The Come Down’ points less towards Revolver and cuts closer to Australian Crawl and Men At Work - a radio friendly ballad with plenty angst. Regardless, it’s on this list which means it’s a darned fine listen.

CUT COPY – STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF A FIELD (MODULAR)
Cut Copy seem to come and go at their own pace, but whenever they return it’s never empty handed. As the name might suggest, ‘Standing In The Middle Of A Field’ recaptures some of that day-glo euphoria of 2013’s Free Your Mind. Within moments the track’s percussive tings pull the listener back into these dance architects' rhythmic charm. A 7” Vinyl of the track will be thrown in with every advance order of their forthcoming Lp.

MARLON WILLIAMS- VAMPIRE AGAIN (CAROLINE AUSTRALIA)
Marlon Williams is a New Zealand expat current based in Melbourne. Kitsch, camp and pure cabaret, ‘Vampire Again’ is the songwriter's first new music since his 2015 debut. The inspiration came from Williams’ experience being “comfortably alone” and “super blazed” while attending the LA Opera’s scoring of Nosferatu (in a Halloween costume). Pushed forward by doo-wop bass figure, the songwriter captures the unnerving hunter and prey dynamic of the classic blues. “I’m a slooper and you know it” he croons. It’s a celebration of being a complete creep, yet somehow it works.
TY SEGALL - BIG MAN (INDEPENDENT)
For six-track EP Fried Shallots, fuzz-merchant Ty Segall has pulled together a collection of his obscure and unreleased material to raise money for the worthy causes of the American Civil Liberties Union. An alternative cut of ‘Big Man (I Want Mummy)’ which cropped up on last year’s Emotional Mugger, ‘Big Man’ comes across as more precise and a cleaner transmission than its scuzzier counterpart. It’s more a classic rocker, but even without the distortion it’s every bit as caustic.
