NEW RELEASES: Another week and once again the music is flying at us from all angles. Yet somehow and against all odds we’ve managed to grill it down to eight of the best. This time around we’re featuring stand up sounds from Girlpool, Connan Mockasin, Thom Yorke, Straight Arrows, Tug, Jess Locke, Yowler and local favourites Ivey!
CONNAN MOCKASIN - SEXY MAN (MEXICAN SUMMER)
Let’s make this fast. This isn’t about jazz it’s about jass. Jass like as in… jass. Y’dig? Well yeah, it’s kinda like jazz, sure. It’s smooth, rebellious and complex. But this is Mockasin’s own music, his own fantasy. He’s complex. Outside of anything that could be stood next too, a weird out. Jassbusters is his new record.
JESS LOCKE – MY BODY IS AN ECOSYSTEM (POOL HOUSE)
The Strength of Locke’s last record Universe was its intimacy. She writes confessional lyrics but there was a hard rocking element holding them all together as well. Choosing to push what might have previously been a more understated element of her sound with this new material is an interesting twist. A risky move but it’s one we’re well willing to follow her on.
YOWLER – WHERE IS MY LIGHT (DOUBLE WHAMMY)
‘Light’ is anguish set to sound. If it's hitting you give some thought to Maryn Jones and company's new album Black Dog In My Path. They've cut a whole darn record of the stuff.
GIRLPOOL - WHERE YOU SINK (ANTI)
LA duo Girlpool know. They know their way around a smouldering riff. When it comes to their output they’re steadily consistent. 'Where You Sink’ (along with twin single ‘Lucy’s’) uncoils with a tumultuous vibration and naturally comes soaked in thick squalls of guitar noise.
THOM YORKE – VOLK (XL RECORDINGS)
It’s hard. Hard to admit that this is good. It’s not like Radiohead needs any more praise. There’s more than enough they’re already burdened with. But what can we say? It stands up. …
STRAIGHT ARROWS – HEADACHE (RIN)
‘Headache’ is hard rocking garage fuzzed to the limits of comprehension.
TUG – YOU’RE NOT EXCEPTIONAL, MAN (INDEPENDENT)
Melbourne’s Tug don’t shy away from the bubblegum absurdities of the prog set. But when they get down to rocking names like GOAT and King Gizzard wouldn’t be too cruel of a comparison. They’ve just released an LP of the same title.
IVEY - WON’T BE (INDEPENDENT)
‘Won’t Be’ is the latest from Gold Coast locals Ivey. It’s a key single from their forthcoming EP and in band’s view it’s that kind of song that neatly walks the listener through all of the record’s elemental shades. What are these? Well in their own words, themes of ‘lost love, animosity and clarity’.
