NEW RELEASES! A little early we know but there were so many great tracks this time round we didn't want to keep 'em from you for any longer! So without further delay here comes the very best from Snail Mail, Julia Holter, Gamjee, Shogun and The Sheets, The Beatles, Ro, Moaning Lisa and Body Type.
MOANING LISA – SUN (HYSTERICAL)
‘Sun’ closes this Canberran outfit’s second EP. Here their interrogations of queer identity come to a climax as they throw what feels like everything they have into the melodramatic finale. Highs, lows and crushing riffs, ‘Sun’ seems to capture it all. It’s bittersweet.
BODY TYPE – LUDLOW (DO YOU BELIEVE IN KARMA?) (PARTISAN/INERTIA)
These four can play. Much of the time with authority and always with emotion. They’ve just released their debut EP and it’s a record coloured with post punk angularity, underground Australiana with maybe just the lightest touch of sunshining '90s lyricism. It’s mostly a collection of familiar singles refurbished there’s also some welcome addition in ‘Teeth’ and ‘Dry Grass’.
THE BEATLES – WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS (ESHER DEMO)
More of the legendarily bootlegged Esher demos! Stripped of the guitar heroics (thanks Clapton, but no thanks) it’s just George half-lost in thought. Sure, the album cut is urgent, but this demo puts across something else, a sense Harrison’s of distance, removal, anger, frustration, stasis and sorrow. Removed from the tumultuous currents of ‘60s counterculture and in crisis, he dives headlong into all of his contradiction.
JULIA HOLTER - WORDS I HEARD (DOMINO)
Julia Holter is an artist who toys with the unexpected. More often than not to brilliant effect. The first of her new singles ‘I Love 2’ seemed to suggest what was coming next would be an ambitious move forward from previous record Have You In My Wilderness but ‘Words I Heard’ calls back to with a warm familiarity. It's evocative of earlier numbers like ‘Sea Calls Me Home’ but also builds in some sweepingly orchestral sprawls.
SHOGUN AND THE SHEETS - HOLD ON KID (WHAT’S YOUR RUPTURE/INERTIA)
After Royal Headache pulled the plug it wasn’t clear if Shogun would be returning. Yet here his distinctive vocals are, setting his outsider soul to music once more. No complaints.
RO – F**KED UP OVER YOU (INDEPENDENT)
Rock’s hedonism, country’s consequence, pure pop production and a tangle of confessional thought.
SNAIL MAIL – SECOND MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE ROOM (AMAZON)
Here Lindsey J covers the work of an obscure and brief-lived Olympian duo which share a name with Courtney Love.
GAMJEE – GOODNESS (INDEPENDENT)
Gamjee are born from the garage but this one’s a little hardcore punk.
