HOBART CURTIS - 'HITS' (Independent)
Following up on his shimmering previous single 'Am I Crazy', Brisbane indie pop singer/songwriter Hobart Curtis strikes a chord with new single 'Hits', released Friday 11 November.
'Hits' is simultaneously infectious and melancholy, tapping into a universally-felt creeping sense of youthful ennui. As anyone with dreams can attest, unfortunately some goals will always remain slightly out of reach. Rooted in realism, 'Hits' is a restless call for validation that never loses its sense of identity; driven forward by chiming guitars and tumbling instrumentation. 'Hits' is anthemic in its despondency - a hymn for disenfranchised creative youth.
Sliding cunningly into the minds and hearts of the local music scene, Hobart Curtis' debut track 'Jackpot' received triple j airplay and, subsequently, he received praise from tastemaking blogs such as acid stag. With the year now drawing to a close, Curtis' 'Hits' aims to touch a raw nerve with young creatives, striking a pinpoint balance between honesty and ambition.
JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW - 'EVIL' (Dew Process)
The tour will kick off in March and feature shows in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. He’ll be supported in Melbourne and Brisbane by rising rock act Moreton, who recently released their mysterious and brooding debut EP Specimen to critical acclaim and support from triple j, double j, and national community radio stations.
McMorrow stunned audiences earlier this year when he performed at the 2016 Splendour In The Grassfestival, showcasing for the very first time material from his heralded new album, We Move – foreshadowing that record’s tremendous international success.
Now the folk-star-turned-r’n’b-maestro will bring his majestic voice and hit songs like ‘Higher Love,’ ‘We Don’t Eat,’ ‘Get Low,’ and ‘Rising Water’ to Australian audiences across the country – his first national tour since the widely celebrated 2014 Post Tropical tour.
THE SMITH STREET BAND - 'DEATH TO THE LADS' (Pool House Records)
Penned on the road whilst driving through America, Death To The Lads has crept into their live set and become an instant fan favourite with its call-to-arms chorus, again displaying songwriter Wil Wagner’s knack of serendipitously turning blight into beauty. “It’s mainly about growing up and changing,” he says of the song’s themes, “admitting we make mistakes and trying to improve ourselves.”
‘Death To The Lads’ is the first taste of the The Smith Street Band’s fourth record, to be released in early 2017 via their own, newly established label Pool House Records. The band will launch the single this month with shows in Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, supported by The Nation Blue, fresh from launching back to back albums, instrumental psych-trio Grim Rhythm and Brisbane experimental pop band Forevr.
WREN KLAUF - 'SPELLBOUND' (Independent)
Wren Klauf is the alluring, collaborative musical and visual project brought together by Sam Faulkner in early 2014. Beginning as a solo venture, the concept's design slowly, but surely, developed into something quite audacious and far more colourful.
As premiered by AAA Backstage, Wren Klauf are bustling with pleasure to today release their new single into the world. After making a global impact with their previous single, 'New Western', new track, 'Spellbound', is out today via GD FRNDS.
The pseudo-psychedelic track continues the band's crisp take on eccentric and experimental pop. Slipping in-and-out of echoey balance, 'Spellbound' relies on genre ethnicity as a daring rhythmical playground.
