It's a new week which means we have new tunessss! Brand spankin new material from Nocturnal Tapes, Set Mo and Cameron Avery.... plus a fair few more for your ears
NOCTURAL TAPES - 'PIECES' (Independent)
After delighting listeners with their standout singles ‘Superficial Light’ and ‘Pattern’ earlier this year, NSW North Coast-based electronic duo Nocturnal Tapes have returned with a darker and more brooding cut titled ‘Pieces’ – Recorded and produced by the group themselves.
‘Pieces’ sees Nocturnal Tapes significantly progress by introducing Tech-house influences, drawing inspiration from Caribou, The Presets and LCD Soundsystem. Whilst the track shines a different light on the band’s creative depth, the pop sensibilities and smart approach to songwriting still remain intact.
MORETON - 'JOHANA' (Create/Control)
Brisbane/Byron Bay three-piece Moreton are poised to release their debut EP, Specimen, October 7 via Create/Control.
Moreton’s music exists in the space where beauty and melancholy collide, creeping like rot on a slowly dying bloom. It’s a sound that waltzes to its own divergent, lingering beat and resonates as something that is truly unique amongst the Australian musical landscape – as perfectly exhibited in their first single, ‘The Water.’
Moreton features front woman Georgia, whose reverb-drenched guitar shimmers into space, while her undeniably stirring voice spreads throughout the mix with a confidence and control that is totally transfixing. Meanwhile, the band’s rhythm section of drummer Myka and bassist Lee together create a brutally powerful yet tranquil underpinning that swings with the weight and grace of the deliberate footsteps of a giant.
SPARROWS - 'GET TO KNOW YOU' (Independent)
New Sydney-based producer / vocalist, Sparrows has just unveiled her completely self-produced and recorded single ‘Get To Know You’ – an intricately layered cut where dynamics duck and weave throughout an eclectic and mesmerising soundscape.
Taking cues from the likes of Amy Winehouse, Grimes and Bjork, ‘Get To Know You’ sees Sparrows combine themes of soul, jazz, pop and electronica; whilst melding elements of acoustic and electronic production to deliver on an exciting, refreshing and cohesive sound.
Sparrows describes the inspiration and meaning behind the song –
“I had laid down a beat, which included recordings of a stapler, lighters and a ping-pong ball. I sat on it for a few weeks not yet knowing it’s home. However after a fun and flirty weekend at Return to Rio, the song pretty much wrote itself. I found myself in a magical setting where the sun was setting on partygoers in wacky costumes. There was a fox, a swarm of smurfs urging a panda to skull a shot of Listerine and a pirate with a tutu. We were all together in our own special world of weirdness. I got to think who are all these amazing people? The beauty of this entire setting was that we had the freedom to express our identities and be accepted in all of our states of existence and that’s what has inspired this song.”
CAMERON AVERY - 'C'EST TOI' (Spinning Top Records)
From his relentless touring exploits with POND and Tame Impala, to his two-man expedition Allbrook/Avery and the birth of his first brainchild The Growl, Perth-bred/LA-based artist Cameron Avery today reveals his single and accompanying visual translation ‘C’est Toi.’ Premiered on Pitchfork this morning along with the announcement that he has signed with iconic US label ANTI (Wilco, Tom Waits), the single was recorded with American musician and producer Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Erykah Badu, Elvis Costello) and follows recent support slots for luminaries The Last Shadow Puppets and Father John Misty.
Written about the last time he fell in love, ‘C’est Toi’ is charged with a raw sense of nostalgia, paired with lyrics laden in a romantic debris. Recorded at Fivestar Studio, Avery worked alongside long-time friend Jonathan Wilson (credits include Father John Misty - Honeybear), who initially encouraged the creation of vocally driven body of work. The single marked the first time Avery had worked with a co-producer across a project.

LUNAR LIGHTRAIL - 'YOU'RE MY FAVOURITE' - (Independent)
When half of his band GO GO FISH moved overseas, Brisbane's SCOTT MERCER called it quits on the scrappy indie-rock outfit. Since then he's kept busy with various collaborations, stepping behind the desk to produce the debut album of HANDS ON HEART and joining Brisbane indie rock institution WE ALL WANT TO on bass. All the while, though, he's kept writing songs.
LUNAR LIGHTRAIL is the new outlet for these songs. The first single, 'You're My Favourite', finds Scott in laid-back, slacker-romantic mode. With his characteristic love of unexpected lyrical turns and plaintive delivery backed by chiming guitars, It's the perfect soundtrack to a lazy spring date.
Recorded with producer ALEX L'ESTRANGE (Mid Ayr, Denpasar, My Own Pet Radio) at the Luv Basement Studio, 'You're My Favourite' marks the beginning of a new musical journey. To keep himself on his toes creatively, Scott has set himself the challenge of releasing his best finished song as a single every four months, come rain or shine. With notebooks full of songs to draw upon, expect fresh Lunar Lightrail material to keep creeping into your ears for a long time to come.
TOM ODELL - 'HERE I AM' (Sony Music Australia)
Tom Odell hit #2 on the official UK Chart this year, with his album WRONG CROWD. From the critically acclaimed body of work he has shared singles including ‘Magnetised’ and ‘Concrete’, and now he returns with the high-octane, stadium-worthy ‘Here I Am’. The visual for the track sees the legendary Kevin Spacey losing himself at a strobing house party; searching, or being chased by a mysterious something or someone. Whilst the house itself is reminiscent of past times, the haunting vocals of Tom Odell remind us of his new-found confidence and matured sound, as they follow Spacey throughout the breath-taking party.
