A non-stop wild ride, BREIZERS’ Galactic Zoo is a powerful debut. Melding explicit vocals and instrumental attack the Sydney trio delivers. You’ll pick up on the Red Hot Chili Peppers influence fast. Like the Peppers there’s that same strain of irreverence and innovation at play. And as it was with their iconic forbears, BREIZERS’ music carries itself with a slacker goofball mentality.
The tracks on this debut record blaze with an aggressive mix of funk, punk and hip hop. It all kicks off with the psych-funk jam of title track ‘Galactic Zoo’. Straight after that, it’s into the lightspeed slap bass of ‘Now In Hi-Def’.

‘Darlin’ is the first song to include vocals and it doesn’t disappoint. Frontman Mason adds some seriously sleazy vocals to his vicious guitar licks. John Tyerman takes over vocals for ‘Moth Song’ while also providing a bouncy bass. The song that follows, ‘Anti’ seems teases the trio’s soft side before playing on the expectation to instead deliver more hard rock. ‘Exhibit 7’? Another instrumental.

How tight do you think you can funk? Well keep up with the BREIZERS and take note because this sh*t’s tight! Credit to drummer Lucas for holding it all together, his groove shuffles into ‘Sashay’ a song which will raise you from your seat for the funkiest tune of them all. “We’re going back to my place, because you’ve got such a pretty face” - love that catchy chorus. Those hungry for the soft underside teased with ‘Anti’ will find it on the acoustic rendition of the track which closes the album.

It is impossible to praise this album too highly. Galactic Zoo is a terrific record. It pushes boundaries with psychedelic funk and grooves that could carry for days on end. BREIZERS sound so much larger than a trio and while they may be noticeably influenced by many of funk punk and hip hop’s greats, they’re also taking steps towards creating something uniquely their own.
