‘Scream Whole’ sounds good on the radio. It sounds good blasting out at a festival. So does ‘Real Tight’. All Triage’s songs do…

Don’t call her a folkie, don’t tell her she’s from the past. Jessica Pratt is an LA artist. While her music may conjure the impression of a singer songwriters or odd traveller of freak folk, push these impressions from your head. ‘If You Were My Hero’ makes Hold Yourself Together’s marquee statement. Despite her faults, Asha Jeffries doesn’t need saving. The Sharon Van Etten of Remind Me Tomorrow is different. She’s not the person you met before. Remind Me is a change. But having said all that it’s no reinvention. She’s not out of character, just walking with swagger. Something which was always there given accent. “I am finally feeling something,” Tim Nelson coos on opening track with ‘Unwinding Myself’. Just one voice and some ‘verb. “I’m still unwinding myself, I’m still finding myself.” Unwinding sets the tone for the entire album. Through Nelson's words and the synthetic sonic landscapes of the band he fronts, Cub Sport's third record explores themes of growth and self-discovery. It's an in-depth peep at human nature. Jimmy Page wanted to be famous. He’d tasted success with The Yardbirds and as an in-demand session guitarist before. Now he was hungry for more. Fame, control - he wanted it all. Is Red Rose Speedway a good album or is it not? Do you want the truth? I know I do but to get at it we have to go to the source. Not the critics but The People. And I’m talking about the internet. A place where - before the algorithms, the likes, and the social media there were forums, fansites and comments sections – anonymous websters with ridiculous usernames and outsized belief of their own importance spoke their minds, a place where all went down. With a critical distance from the hype of the ‘70s and the synthetic fantasy of the 1980s, what did the denizens of the net in the late ‘90s and early 2000s think of Paul McCartney and Wings’ Red Rose Speedway? Diving to the source we’ll find their words and from these statements, we will travel to the truth. On this Cheap Thrills reissue, there’s plenty of what put the music across in the first place. That same wild energy. It’s in Janis Joplin’s voice and it carries on the band’s music. All of them knew their chops. The structure is free form, and the jam is the ultimate end. With the group behind her, Joplin took the Bay Area sound to the world as something free and idiosyncratic descended upon popular culture. Not everyone dug it, but the hippy symbolism was there for all to see. Vermillion is ambitious, Vermillion is pop. It’s music from Brisbane, Queensland. It’s Clea’s debut. |
