Since the release of their EP Break The Mode/ILL, Gold Coast two-piece CAKES have been flat out playing venues throughout Queensland. To conclude the weekend I caught CAKES at the Re-Launch of Sounds of Sunday at Liars Bar, Broadbeach Tavern.
If you’ve heard of CAKES you would refuse to believe that they consist of just Jake on Guitar/Vocals and Sam on Drums. The two combined create this enormous wall of heavy rock that’s just a punch in the face, just what we need on a Sunday night. From the opening riff of ‘Love Ballad’ to start the set, the crowd and myself accepted the fact we’ll have sore necks by the end. The two-piece then followed up from their incredibly heavy and slow opening song into the intricate instrumental ‘Parkour’. More people started coming through the door and joined in the evident head banging like everyone else. Sam needed a quick breather from his on-point banging of the drums as Jake thanked the crowd for sticking around for the special re-launch show. Without further ado they continued into the familiar songs ‘ILL’ and ‘Break My Mode’ from their two-track EP, which I highly recommend. After the chorus of ‘ILL’ I think everybody was still coming to realisation that only two people were creating such a sound full of grunt. As the two-piece smashed out their heavily groovy original ‘Octopus’, we’d arrived at their last song of the set. It was obvious everyone’s necks were becoming overworked throughout the solid set. CAKES concluded with ‘Elite’, which I believe was the highlight for them. The complex outro to the song tests the abilities and musicianship of the two, and is the perfect example to show how tight they are as a band. Overall CAKES played an absolute killer set with no signs of fatigue, regardless of their recent busy schedule of shows. This Gold Coast two-piece are one to keep an eye on, their sound is unlike anything around and is an experience that needs to be seen live and loud.
