Client Liaison bring funk and fearless sensuality to their ‘A Foreign Affair’ World Tour

The night began with what would be the taste left in our mouths for the rest of the evening – Pure Sweetness. Sydney based, Muki, who is a fresh face in the music scene, proved to be a strong opening act, showing off her new single ‘Sassaparilla’. I can see big things coming from the newcomer!

Total Giovanni were up next – the Melbournians’ outfits certainly gave the crowd something to talk about, but mostly left us asking: “Boxers or Briefs?”. Lead singer and guitarist Vachel Spirason bared all to the audience, dropping his pants mid set to show off his patently untrendy tighty whiteys. While the sparkly get-ups were a key element of the performance, the five-piece ensemble truly stood out by letting their groovy-disco dance music build the audience into a liberating frenzy. By the end of the set, there was not a single person in the room whose body was not embracing their funky tunes.

As Total Giovanni exited and the stage blackened in preparation for Client Liaison, the room filled with an all-consuming anticipation for the performance that was to come. Speaking with other eager attendees, it was pretty clear as to why the Client Liaison gentlemen had sold out one of Sydney’s most prestigious venues. You had an overwhelming number of hard-core fans packing out the room, and the reasoning for their devotion to the band is that they bring to the table a sense of sensuality and individuality. Seemlessly intertwining Aussie culture with a divine corporate cockiness that I feel lives within in all of us.

As the lights came up, nine beaming rectangle outlines faded in – Monte Morgan approached the front of the stage. With the accompaniment of a projection show and Morgan’s double breasted flamboyant suit, the show began with End of the Earth. The end was surely left to come as the intensity of the performance increased with each and every track.

At the end of That’s Desire, the audiences could hear the notorious introduction to Music Sounds Better With You. It was here that a choreographed dance sequence commenced including front man Monte, triple j’s Tom Tilley (Bass), Geordie Miller (Guitar) and Harvey Miller out the back, which was highly entertaining to watch.

Other highlights of the show included Muki restaging to accompany Morgan for the title track of the tour ‘A Foreign Affair’ – although it is hard to be compared to an Australian icon such as Tina Arena, Muki showed off her own style and capability during this track.

Client’s encore started with the politically-driven ‘Canberra Won’t be Calling Tonight’ before the night concluded with fan favourite ‘Off White Limousine’. The show couldn’t have ended on more of a high; between Monte Morgan’s exceptional performance, several very talented backup dancers and some incredible Audio and Visuals – Client Liaison did not disappoint.
