It was the start of the long weekend which meant copious amounts of beers and loads of time with mates, and the fact that 3 of my favourite local bands were playing a gig together was just a plus. This was the first time I’d been to Currumbin Creek Tavern, it was full of a vast collection of individuals, this often leads to fairly good things and laughs so I was well prepared for an eventful night. Two of the bands playing the show were marking their first ever gig, Planet and Straays which was super exciting and brought the entirety of their friendship groups and more, which was awesome to see.

Straays were first to kick off the night, a brand new band to make their mark on the Gold Coast music scene, and a sound that the coast hasn’t really experienced before, 90’s grunge that we all know and love. It was evident that the boys had been rehearsing, they were super tight and worked really well together as a three piece. It was also evident they had heaps of friends, and they were there, all frothing hard and they created a beautiful little whirlpool of arms, legs and other body pieces. The security was well in shock of what was erupting in the small venue and they even had to get up on stage to call off the gig if the crowd didn’t settle down, which made it even more rad and punk. The Straays boys cracked out some well loved covers of Silverchair ‘Israelis Son’ and Violent Soho ‘Eat My Parents’, as well as plenty of originals by these dudes.

After clearing out a load of broken glass, hooligans and more the next local band on the bill, Planet were warming up for their first official gig and after hearing only one of their tracks on soundcloud I knew this was gonna be a sweet set. The three piece have such an awesome sound, think Ty Segall or Fuzz mixed with a bit of grunge, so one tasty little combo. Once again a whole truck load of the bands mates and punters had created a sweaty little pit which really made the show that little bit more rad. Super keen to see these guys gig a lot more around the coast soon!

To finish off the night was local dudes Radolescent who have been floating around the GC music scene for a fair few months now, playing regular shows at Miami Shark Bar and they had made an appearance at this years Shakafest. The Rad boys are always guaranteed to bring a crowd, and this show was no different. After constantly gigging for the last couple of months, the boys have shown a massive improvement in their live performance and stage presence as a whole, really working together as a collective which is so sick to see. Cracking out some real catchy tunes, witty and extremely relatable lyrics that people just froth.

All in all such a sick night of music, it makes me real excited to see where these bands are going, because they all have an element of something that the GC music scene hasn’t seen yet, so get behind brilliant live music and catch these bands whenever you can because you’ll be well stoked you had!
