Red Engine Caves @ The bird, Perth. With special guests The Drools and Fuzz Toads.
It’s safe to say that the Perth music scene rarely disappoints. The vibe alone inside the intimate setting of the bird was exciting for a Wednesday night. $5 pints may have something to do with the excitement but everyone was getting pretty happy inside when the bands did their thing.
First, Fuzz Toads, a psychedelic garage band that set the scene for the night with a great opening set. My favourite thing about these guys is their breakdowns, from dancing about to a king gizzard style happiness, and then all of a sudden head banging softly to a heavier breakdown. Creating a damn great atmosphere for the crowd early on.
Next up! Red Engine Caves, these guys definitely had the show tonight. An entertaining, journey styled set with psychedelic tones. The bassist has a technique I have never seen before, I couldn’t decide who was better at shredding, him or the lead guitarist. Overall they had a wicked old school 80s blues/rock tone and a generally rocking stage presence which gave the crowd plenty of energy. A set I was pretty devastated came to an end.
Closing the night with an incredibly fun set was The Drools. An Indi grunge band that sure enough gave a few people sore necks this morning. Beating out a heavier rhythm with bluesy tones, they aren’t shy of talent. These guys just launched their new single Sullen Scenes which is available on their Facebook.
Not hearing any of these bands live before last night I stood there finding it really hard to fault this one. All these guys have incredible talent and stage presence, and I can only really put it down to not being able to hear the lead guitars enough in the mix. Other than that ill be seeing these guys on stage hopefully again soon.
If you want to see these guys live, Fuzz Toads are headlining at Jack Rabbit Slims on the 25th June, and The Red Engine Caves are getting amongst the Fremantle Winter Music Festival also on the 25th. See you there, yewww!
