On Saturday the 17th of March Tweed Heads played home to The Drop Festival, the very first of its kind. A newly formed festival that coincides with World Surfing League Championship. Conditions for the festival were more than perfect, the sun was out, the drinks were icy cold and the music was phenomenal. The talented line-up included Australia’s best up and coming and established artists. The day kicked off with Ruby Fields opening the festival and although she had to cut her set short, she got the crowd wired, She got us wired, and She got Steph Gilmore wired enough to accompany her on stage for 'I want'. One of Field's highly anticipated songs. To the crowds dismay she was unable to play 'P Plates' and was met with an array of fans demanding this be rectified. Luckily the ever so humble Fields felt nothing but absolute gratitude. Telling us later in an interview 'It was amazing to think they even wanted to hear my song'. Alternative rockers HOLY HOLY followed and played an exceptional set mixed with songs from their latest album ‘Paint; and previous classics. ‘Elevator’ and ‘True Lovers’ saw the crowd erupt as they sung along to the singles that have been so popular over the last 12 months. Tim’s outstanding singing blended with Oscar’s flawless guitar playing brought us into the late afternoon ending their set with ‘Send My Regards’. Fremantle hipsters ‘San Cisco’ provided their upbeat, funky vibes that had the all ages crowd dancing along from start to finish, however some in the crowd seemed more excited than others. This forced front man Jordi to stop mid song to advise that type of rough behaviour has no place at their shows, with Scarlett following suit and saying they wont continue if it happens. With no time wasted they continued on with their fantastic set playing ‘Awkward’, ‘Fred Astaire’ and ‘Hey, Did I Do You Wrong?’ just to name a few. The sun was setting quickly to conclude the picturesque afternoon as garage punks Dune Rats prepared to sub-headline the festival. Their much-loved carefree attitude was noticeable within the crowd enjoying every minute of their set and influenced everyone to have a drink in hand at all times. There was no better way to end a Saturday afternoon as the potty mouthed punks played their popular tunes ‘6 Pack’, ‘Braindead’, Scott Green’ and ending with ‘Bullshit’. I was surprised to turn my head and see a young girl screaming the words to 6 Pack. The trio got the crowd warmed up and tipsy for headliners Safia. The electronic duo have kept fairly quiet until the release of their latest single ‘Cellophane Rainbow’, but it was obvious no one forgot their previous classics. The light show blended with the smooth, immaculate musicianship of Safia set unbelievable imagery for the evening. What a great start to the first of many 'Drops'. The Drop Festival kicked of the first leg of it’s tour in spectacular style that had Tweed Heads begging for more at the end of the night. The festival couldn’t have been any better and hopefully we see the WSL make The Drop Festival a reoccurring event. NEXT UP
