Gold Coast duo CAKES cut a powerful sound and latest single 'Eucalyptus' is no exception. From the takeoff, the track's pummelling instrumentation comes as a sudden shock of energy and flair. It’s a powerful alchemy of gut-wrenched percussion and crashing washes of churning guitar noise. In a matter seconds, its lyrics send the mind spiralling as vocals twist about an atmospheric soundscape, Production wise the pair have continued to refine a hard-riffing sound. Cakes capture some of that stadium-filling bombast of acts like Royal Blood but dispose of any notions of overly-polished rock. Informed by post-punk and hardcore forbears they keep it visceral and real. These two cultivate something gritty and a little raw while delivering the kind of kinetic impact your garden variety rock outfit could only envy.
Rabbit Radio: Can you tell us a little about yourselves?

CAKES: We are CAKES. A homegrown Gold Coast duo making post-punk music in a tiny sweatbox in Burleigh Heads, Gold Coast. We started this band early this year and found out we had actually met many years before and Sam had actually bought a drum kit off Gumtree from me. The drum kit he now uses in CAKES. It’s a small world. A band of coincidence but now we have a tight friendship and an absolute passion for making bangers week in and week out.

RR: Tell us about the track we're premiering today.

C: 'Eucalyptus' is a track about feeling restricted by your own invention of whom you want other people to see. We see ourselves as multi-faceted individuals that enjoy making music, hitting the surf, caring about the state of lawns across the coast, being stoked on a strawberry milk, reminiscing about the Washington DC Hardcore scene, playing ps4 and being utterly obsessed with cats. This song is about doing whatever you feel like doing because you enjoy doing it not because you are trying to invent an image of what you want people to see.

RR: What was your production and writing process?

C: This song was written very quickly and I think we knew what we wanted to do with it straight from the get go. We wanted something that sounded huge, that could open a show or a record and have a catchy chorus with a good message. We normally record everything ourselves but we went to a mate's studio called Breaking Point Productions because we ultimately wanted a really good drum sound and not to get the aluminium slap back that we get in our rehearsal space. We got the drums and guitars and then mixed it ourselves.

RR: What does the new year have in store?

C: We are releasing our EP Prescription Bugs physically at Elsewhere with 10” records and limited edition merchandise. Very excited about this. We are also heading to Melbourne for three shows on the 4th, 5th and 6th of January. Hoping to keep playing as many shows as we can and hopefully land some sweet supports in the New Year.

RR:Where can we hear more of your music?

C: Bandcamp [https://cakesaus.bandcamp.com/] and triple j Unearthed [https://www.triplejunearthed.com/artist/cakes]!
