Presented by Royal International Convention Centre, Brisbane Showgrounds, Hutchinson Builders and Mountain Goat Beer, the 2018 Queensland Music Awards will spotlight a new wave of songwriters alongside established names with today's announcement of finalists spread far across the state. Featuring performances form WAAX, Bard Butcher, Carmouflage Rose, Jeremy Neale, The Kite String Tangle, May Lyn & Greta Stanley, the annual party to celebrate Queensland music will take place on Monday 14 May 2018 in brisbane- tickets are on sale now via Oztix.
Best Pop Song, traditionally the sunshine state's strongest category, is this year proving no exception, with the nominee list featuring Amy Shark for 'Weekends', Cub Sport's 'Chasin', Sheppard with 'Coming Home' and The Jungle Giants' hit 'Feel The Way I Do'.
Following her recent worldwide success, Amy Shark leads the pack alongside The Jungle Giants, both with three nominations, followed closely by dual nominees WAAX, Tia Gostelow, The Kite String Tangle, Cub Sport and King Social. Battling it out for Best Rock Song are Brisbane's hometown heroes DZ Deathrays and Jeremy Neale together with first-time nominees WAAX and the Gold Coast's Landings. The GC continues to deliver, with newcomers Eliza & The Delusionals, Harry J Hart, and Eleea receiving their debut nominations alongside previous QMA winners Amy Shark, Karl S Williams and Doolie. FNQ is represented with four nominations, including Carins-based Hip-Hop/Rap nominee VEXED and emerging songwriter Greta Stanley, Kuranda's Soul/Funk/R'n'B soloist Mayah and Schools Award nominees Legends of Perhaps, the sibling four-piece form Cooktown. Also announced is the 2018 Album of the Year shortlist featuring The Jungle Giants' (Quiet Ferocity), The Creases (Tremolow), Cub Sport (BATS), The Kite String (The Kite String Tangle) and Airling (Hard to Sleep, Easy to Dream). In addition to these nominations, four finalists are in the running for the $10,000 Billy Thorpe Scholarship 2018, supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland: Brisbane-based ambient-electronic producer Yoste, indie electronica songwriter Keelan Mak, acoustic pop songwriter Harry Phillips, and Greta Stanley, The Scholarship recipient will be announced during the Queensland Music Awards ceremony. The night will also feature winner announcements for Export & Lifetime Achievement Awards.
