We are so damn pleased to premiere for you, Daisy Brains second single ‘Float Forever’. This band has only popped up recently, and although they have just one show under their belt, we are expecting huge things. We are loving their grungey,  yet dreamy sound and catchy melodies on this track and we know you will dig it too. 'Float Forever' casts a psychedelic haze over powering alt rock undercurrents. Off killer guitar lines curl about, Jarryd Inns growling vocals. Doused in heroic fuzz, Daisy Brains' latest pairs transcendent feeling with earthly doubts. Drawing influence from The Vines and Cage The Elephant we can't wait to hear more. Get to know this new band as they discuss the short history of Daisy Brains, the direction of their music, Jarryd’s opinion on the 2003 Australian Idol Final and what’s in store for the rest of 2018.
Interview by Christian Kafritsas
RR: Thanks for taking the time to chat with me, we’ll have a talk about the band, the new single ‘Float Forever’ and all. But I would like to start with the band because you guys have popped up out of nowhere, how long has Daisy Brains been around for?

J: Daisy Brains as project probably since about the start of the year. In terms of playing with the band, the last two to three months. I’ve been writing on my own for a couple years now, bought a loop pedal and started writing a bit more complex parts with a few guitars and just needed some chorus hooks with some drums. Yeah kind of like call some of my good mates together and start making some noise.

RR: So the band is made up of Mark, Michael, Lukas, Luke and yourself. How did you guys start Daisy Brains?

J: So basically I live with Mark. Mark and I have been playing together for probably five or six years, even back to old café gigs and stuff like that. Where as Michael, I played in band called Pirates Alive with him and that was back probably four years ago now. So if we were going to play again I wanted to get him back on board. Lucas was a good mate of Mark and they had a few songs they had been jamming together so he jumped on board pretty easy on the drums. Then we needed a bass player and Froggy was our man, Frog (Luke) Jones.

RR: It’s always the bass player that’s last, why is that (laughs)?

J: I don’t know, I think the guitarists just think they can get away without them.

RR: As a bass player myself we cop it, it sucks (laughs).

J: Yeah well don’t worry I played bass in Pirates (Alive) so I know exactly what it’s like.

RR: Already in your short career you’re about to release your second single ‘Float Forever’ next week, are you excited to get it out?

J: Yeah definitely man, its kind of one of those things I’ve been holding onto for about a month or two, shortly after I did the first one. It wasn’t going to be released until I thought we’d put a few more songs together and maybe do an EP, but now that we’ve formed the band it’s sort of taken a bit longer than I want. So I thought I’d at least get this out because I don’t want to ride on one single for to long, at least give everyone a taste of what’s to come.

RR: So you released ‘We Used To Laugh About It’ earlier this year and now ‘Float Forever’. Were both songs written in the similar period?

J: Yeah definitely, in the last six months.

RR: So how did you choose which single would be released as the first taste of Daisy Brains?

J: ‘We Used To Laugh About It’ was definitely one, I think I’ve written about twelve songs I could comfortably say are ready to be released. I think ‘We Used To Laugh About It’ was definitely a stand out for me because it was kind of the sound I’m sort of focusing for. The next one ‘Floats Forever’ that’s just a quick, little catchy, easy banger to listen to I guess and appeal to a lot of ears as opposed to really nail yourself in the one genre. Which I think a lot of bands can do pretty easily with their first few singles.

RR: My first impression when listening ‘Float Forever’ was that it matched the song title perfectly, it has a nice psychedelic feel to it that isn’t as noticeable on ‘We Used To Laugh About It’. Would you agree with that as well?

J: Yeah definitely.

RR: If so, is there a certain style you prefer between the two?

J: I would say that I’ll definitely always have more of a Grungey flavour than the Psychedelic. But with three guitarists now and a whole lot of pedals, we have the opportunity to jump between the two and I think that’s going to be really good with our live shows when we do our breakdowns and things like that. Only playing with the band for two months it’s hard to capture that sort of sound for recordings at an early stage so that’s why I steered away from the heavier songs at this point for recording. Kept it more basic, catchy easier songs for now which even ‘We Used To Laugh About It’ is, it’s pretty much written on a loop it’s four chords all the way through. Just working on the builds, the choruses and the verses to make it a bit more powerful.

RR: Now that you guys are a full band and sort of looking for your sound, are you saying you’ll probably be looking more towards that grungeier, heavier sound?

J: Grungey, heavier sound with plenty layers of guitars, a lot of room to move with five people in band which I’ve never had before and I don’t think any of us have had before that are playing together. We’re all pretty excited in that regard.

RR: So exciting times to come then?

J: Yeah definitely man. We’re a bit older and we know sort of what we want to sound like and how we need to do it. There no sort of rush with us either, we’ve all got jobs and make enough money to get by so there’s no stress, there’s no pressure on making it or not making it. Just doing what we thoroughly enjoy.

RR: That’s awesome and I really love that attitude the fact that you’re not out there to make it, it’s about the music and so early in your career done what you said you’re doing. It’s pretty cool.

J: Yeah it’s cool, it’s sweet man I appreciate the compliment.

RR: So Daisy Brains first ever show took place last week at The Northern then, is that right?

J: Yeah that’s right, same night.

RR: How did show number one go down?

J: Yeah it was good, really good. We only had a twenty-minute set; we’ve got five songs at the moment without any covers. But we didn’t fuck up, we made it through without sort of stopping and everyone gave us a good review and we walked out cheering. Can’t wait for the next one.

RR: Sounds like the complete opposite to a bands first show where it’s an absolute catastrophe then?

J: That’s exactly right and I’ve never had to be the lead singer before either. It was kind of nice to get the nod from your friends that have heard you when they’re sort of drunk but have never heard you as a band or on stage, so that was nice.

RR: So this is your first time leading a band is that right?

J: Pretty much man, Pirates was a three-piece and I might’ve sung one or two songs every now and again but Michael was definitely the lead singer and the front man. So it’s kind of weird.

RR: Do you have more gigs planned for the rest of the year?

J: Looked nothing booked at the moment apart from we obviously got to jam a lot more, we want to get another two or three songs. We’re definitely open for gigs, we just don’t want to every weekend. We want to play every sort of once a month and save it for the good ones and play with some good bands. There’s a lot of good bands coming out of the coast at the moment, so we’re looking forward to support some of them that are popping up and doing their thing,

RR: Awesome, well we’re looking forward to it as well. Now Jarryd, you guys are a band were still getting to know so I hope you don’t mind if we get into serious questions to really get to know you guys if that’s cool?

J: Sweet as

RR: You have the option to play a sold out Suncorp Stadium, however must play the show either naked, blindfolded or wearing binoculars. Which would you prefer?

J: Blindfolded.

RR: Is there a reason why?

J: Nah not really, I think it’d just be pretty cool having no eyes and hearing everything really well.

RR: The only thing is wearing a blindfold you can’t see the people in the crowd.

J: Yeah that’s alright, it’s all about the noise. It’s not about the visuals man; it’s about the noise.

RR: You’ve been chosen for Triple J’s Like A Version, however can only put your spin on either Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’ or Britney Spear ‘One More Time’. Which do you choose?

J: It would have to be ‘One More Time’, I hate Aqua and Britney was hot back in the day before she shaved her head.

RR: You know even with the shaved head?

J: You know that’s it everyone has their preferences.

RR: If you’d be keen to cover that, you said you don’t have a cover yet maybe think about that one?

J: Yeah maybe man, it’s up there (laughs).

RR: Who would you prefer to collaborate with on your next single release and why, Good Charlotte or Sum 41?

J: Oh fuck, I’m going to have to say Sum 41.

RR: Is there a reason why?

J: ‘In Too Deep’ trumps ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous’, simple as that. ‘All Killer, No Filler’ baby.

RR: Last question of deep questions with Daisy Brains, it’s a little bit controversial. Do you believe Shannon Noll was robbed in the 2003 Australian Idol final?

J: No I don’t.

RR: Awesome, very happy you agree with that because I voted for Guy Sebastian.

J: Yeah look I was a fan of Guy (Sebastian) since he won this competition on Nickelodeon, you go back and it’s pretty amazing times for him and I’ve kind of been a little fan of him since then. Even when he did that Like A Version not long ago, that was pretty cool. You got to give it to him, the man can sing.

RR: It’s funny you say that because that’s actually my favourite Like A Version.

J: There you go, you got good taste mate. I don’t really like that type of music, but cmon.

RR: That’s it, well Jarryd last question before I let you go. What’s in store for Daisy Brains in 2018?

J: Hopefully an EP, definitely at least another four or five shows. Yeah, just music and shows.

RR: You were saying before you’ve already got quite a few songs in the bag at the moment, are they all ready to go?

J: They are by myself but it’s a matter of choosing the good ones that the band likes and obviously they’ve all got songs as well. We’ve only jammed and jotted out these songs to just have time for that gig that we booked, now it’s a matter of working out what we really do and don’t like and where we want to go.

RR: Well Jarryd, thanks for taking the time to chat with me this morning. I’m really looking forward to the response of ‘Float Forever’, and look forward to checking out some future shows and what you guys have planned as well.
