Rabbit Radio's Keeley Connolly had a chat to GANZ pre splendour and how he made the transition from Hip Hop to Electronic.
Hey Jordy its Keeley here from Rabbit Radio how are you going?
Yeah good we just got in!

Are you stoked to be back in Australia?
Yeah definitely, definitely. When we got to announce it I had to wait a month or so I was really stoked to get back again. Every time I leave Australia I can’t wait to get back as soon as possible.

Are you excited for splendour?
Yeah definitely, because I don’t know what to expect there actually. I have heard a lot of good stories but, don’t know what to expect. Its super big I hear.

Is this one of the biggest festivals you have played?
In Australia definitely, the other festival I played was two years ago. That was good as well, but it was like super cold and chilly they had a lot of wind and stuff, so the weather up here is much better.

Well splendour last year was really muddy so you picked a good year to come out.
Yeah because they told me I need to bring gumboots?

Yep haha
So it looks like I wont need to get them, otherwise ill just walk and slide.

How was your tour in the states?
It was good I was with Djemba for two weeks I think, but nothing compared to Australia again.

You have collaborated quite a bit with Djemba, how was it?
Yeah we did a few tracks together two years ago, we still need to finish all those tracks for the EP, but it got delayed so were going to figure out when we are going to hang together and finish those tracks. But there’s no rush so it’s all good.

How about your EP how long did it take to finish that are you stoked with the way it turned out?
Actually it took a few months but the track I did with Chris from what so not, we started 2 years ago and we just finished it about 6 months ago, so that’s the only track that took a while.

That’s Lone isn’t it? That’s an amazing track, how was that collaborating with Australian artists?
I wasn’t there I think Chris and George Maple sat together and wrote the track, like the lyrics. And then we just put it together and sent it over on drop box, and we met up a few times when Chris was touring Europe, so those were the moments we could sit together and try and do this track. But the vocals worked out really nice actually. We started the track without thinking about vocals, and eventually Chris called me and he’s like yo I got this sick girl on the track and I listened to it and it was so good I was like sick.

That’s awesome! That is such a huge track and one of my favourites, another one would have to be faded, I love the voice sampling its so euphoric, what was the inspiration behind it?
That track, I wanted to put on one really euphoric track. I was making a lot of drafts, and I don’t know how I made the track but it just sort of popped up, out of the blue. We set it up to put on some vocals but it didn’t work out so I stuck to the vocal sampling thing, which gives it more vibes. Vocals can break it or make it so it was quite risky, I liked the vocals chopped its much better.

When you got into music did you head straight into the electronic side of things?
No I started with hip-hop actually, 7 years ago, 7 or 8 years ago because I used to drum. And then a friend of mine was making house and all that stuff and UK garage, and I found it quite interesting. So I started with hip hop then I went to UK Garage and Fidget, back to hip hop, then electro and then back to hip hop and then to dubstep. Then eventually to the stuff I am making now I still don’t know what to call it.

You still have the hip-hop vibes in some of those tracks.
Yeah definitely I think it’s a crossover between electronica and hip-hop

Do you have any advice for people creating electronic music, or anyone pursuing their dream as a musician or a producer?
That’s actually a pretty hard one because I get that question a lot and I never know what to answer. But just don’t loose yourself in what the crown wants, or what people expect you to do. A lot of people expected me to do a lot of tracks like hyper paradise and say my name but my EPs are a lot different to that stuff. That’s probably what I am going to do in the next few year, for anyone who wants to make music just do what ever you want.

When did you realise that your music was going to take you around the world? And how did you feel?
That’s a hard one as well because I was doing a lot of stuff earlier like dubstep and it never worked out. So I was at this school of music and I dropped out after about 4 or 5 months, the school asked me to because the hyperparadise track had a lot of exposure so I could tour a lot and I missed a lot of school, so from that moment I took the risk and I’m lucky that it worked out eventually.

Have you reached your biggest goal yet?
No not really, I don’t really have a goal. It’s just me making music and let people enjoy it. I don’t know what I want to do in 8 years or so but hopefully it will be something with music. I just want to see how everything goes; it’s better than having a lot of goals and then being disappointed. It’s the same as making a track and in your mind thinking it’s going to be a hit and eventually its not

Is that the same for any future plans for GANZ just taking it as it comes?

Yeah I’m just going to release some new stuff in the next few months and hopefully it will work out, if it doesn’t work out I’m going to try some other music I like as well.

That’s all for today thanks Jordy thanks so much for your time

Thank you so much for the interview!

No worries man we will see you soon in Perth and have an awesome time at Splendour
