Jariah had a chat to Jimmy Vann from The VANNS ahead of their upcoming tour which includes a trip to Sunny QLD for SHAKAFEST being held at one of our favourite local spots,  Miami Shark Bar. The boys will be playing alongside DRAPHT, Dune Rats & local legends IVEY, Von Villains, plus more. There will also be a skate demo, coupled with Graffiti, Art, DJ's.

What are you up-to at the moment?
Not much just cruising and playing some guitar! It’s bloody freezing and not ideal. I wouldn’t want to go outside without putting a jacket on that’s for sure!

Well it’s super sunny in QLD at the moment
Yeah I’m jealous, hanging for it

So you guys just wrapped up your national tour, how did that go?
Yeah it was wicked probably the best tour we’ve down so far for a headline tour anyway. It was pretty much flat out from the get go. Now we’ve finished we just want to get back on the road but we were kind of hanging to have a bit of a break and write some music, now we can’t wait to get back!

What was the best thing that happened on tour, I want some funny stories?
There are a lot of things we probably shouldn’t say, the whole things a bit blurry for me. It was just so flat out. Every place we went to, it’s like the crowd, I don’t know what they were on or what they were taking but every crowd we played at it’s like they were just on another level. So were like we have to step up here, we have to get on their level if we’re going to do this right, So multiple multiple beers to keep the tour rolling. I think it got to our drummer a bit much, he’s doing dry July at the moment, so I think it hit him a bit hard. But the whole tour was awesome. All in all it was just a really good tour and people were insane, let’s put it that way!

So you released ‘I’m not the one’ back in April any new stuff coming our way?
Uhm we’re going to release another single pretty soon, with a little release show for it and the EP will be a little later in the year. So yeah another single will be coming within a month or two.

So next tour we should be hearing it?
Yeah we only have a couple of shows but at the end of the year we will do another big national at the end of the year to celebrate the EP. And then soon as that is recorded we are getting to work on an album so that will be in the works – A lot of writing to be coming!

Do you do most of the writing or is it a shared thing?
I dno I just kind of have all these idea’s and half a song written then ill take it to the fella’s and we’ll just jam it out until it’s feeling good. We write pretty quick but the initial idea might take a little bit. But yeah it’s pretty cruisey, set up in the shed and just go for it really loud!

So are you all from Kiama?
We just kind of met through previous bands or all hanging out at the same place where we would go to watch music. Lachie the drummer is from Wollongong and Tom the bass player is from down the coast and I’m kind of in the middle. Then we all just kind of met at a gig and just jammed and started writing tunes.

You’re coming up our way soon for Shakafest, What’s your favourite thing about playing in QLD?
Well one thing it’s going to be warm! Well it’s going to be a lot warmer then here, like I love surfing but the surf will be pumping and I’m like I don’t even know if i wanna go out its freezing. Hopefully there’s surf up there and there’s sick bands playing at the festival’s as well. As soon as we finish the party will start!

Have you been to shark bar before?
I haven’t no, what’s the vibe?

Well let’s just say you always know you’re going to get rowdy at Shark Bar....
Well that’s good, we’re getting withdrawals from tour from getting loose all the time so we’ll need something to hype us up a bit

Have you played with any of the other bands before?
Yeah we’ve played with IVEY we’re good mates with them. White Blanks are from where we are, we’ve like grown up with them and played with them a couple times. We’ve hung out with the Dunnies a bit but haven’t played with them. We’re relying on them for an after party!

Who are you looking forward to playing with most?
To be honest, I’m heaps keen to see dunnies and i haven’t seen them in ages. The last time I saw them was down in Tassie for Party In The Paddock and they’ve got a new banga out so I’m keen to see it live and they’re just top dudes.

Most important question of the interview - Would you rather fall asleep for a year or eat a handful of bumblebees?
I’d just go bumblebees straight up, like I love sleeping but a year’s just too long. There’s beer’s to be drinking, things to do! I can’t drink beer if I’m asleep.

Favourite beer?
At the moment I’m settled on Coopers, we just played a coopers gig and they gave us heaps of free beer.

Nice promo there...
Na I’ve got to say home brew!

Thanks for having a chat Jimmy, and we will see you guys at Shakafest!
