These girls are set to take over Australia and have had a rocketed tour under their belt already this year. Tayla Sudall from Rabbit Radio asked the ladies a few questions before they wrap up with their last show Friday the 23rd at Miami Shark Bar.
RR: Hey guys, thanks so much for taking some time to have a chat! You guys have a brand new single out titled ‘Silly Girl’ and a bunch of tour dates throughout February which must be exciting, what can you tell us about your new single, ‘Silly Girl’?

‘Silly girl' is our first single to be released from our upcoming LP which you can expect to hear later on in the year, it's also the first thing we've put out since releasing our debut EP 'Pussy Orientated'. We've been really excited to put this song out as we've been working on getting our unique VOIID sound since our debut EP, and we feel that 'Silly Girl' gets the past year's efforts across.

RR: You guys have a really punky, kind of grungey vibe, who would you say are your biggest influences?

Majority of our influences are 90s all-female punk/grunge bands such as L7, Hole, and Babes in Toyland.

RR: So ‘Silly Girl’ is kind of a bit of a fuck you to the pretentious and nasty people in this world, what motivated the lyrics to this song?
What motivated the lyrics to ‘Silly Girl’ was a colossal amount of bullshit we had to deal with when we first started playing. A whole lot was going on behind the scenes, and while it was tough to deal with, it seemed to have given us some great song ideas. All in all, ‘Silly Girl’ is just an amalgamation of all the moronic things we’ve had to deal with as a band.

RR: Can we expect a film clip for this song?
A: Definitely! Be sure to keep ya eyes peeled.

RR: So you guys describe yourselves as a hellish girl shriek band and that you all resonate with each other’s mutual interest of all that is female – what do you mean by this?

Well, when we all met each other we had a strong mutual interest in the women of the music industry like Joan Jett and Donita Sparks, and we felt there was a lack of female representation in the Australian music industry; especially within our genre. When we finally got together to make music it was an unspoken agreement that we would channel our emotions through the music we made; Which just so happened to be, as we’d call it, ‘hellish girl-shriek’.

RR: Girls today seem to really be standing up and kind of ensuring that the female voice is heard all around the world and your music seems to really be in line with this new feminist kind of approach to everything, would you guys say you’ve had to endure a lot of sexism or just plain idiocy, which in turn has influenced the vibe of your band?

Sexism in the music industry comes as no surprise, and we’ve had to endure quite a lot of sexist behaviour thus far, however the aggression induced by this kinda shit definitely adds to the vibe of who we are as a band. We’ve been interrogated by men asking if we know how to set up/play our instruments correctly, with an added comment like “you know, if you did *insert mansplained nonsense here*, you’d play a lot better..” to flat out being asked “so, which band members on the bill tonight are you fucking?”. Being a woman in a male dominated industry can be tough and plain fucking annoying; But we bite back. Hard.

RR: How did you guys all meet and become a band?

Kate and Anji met in high school and have been making music together for years, it wasn’t until Kate moved to Brisbane for uni that she met me (Jasmine). We jammed together for the first time in March 2016, and I had officially joined VOIID not long after. Then in January 2017 Antonia, who was Kates housemate at the time, started playing bass for us.

RR: So you guys released your EP ‘Pussy Orientated’ in December 2016 and now you’re back pumping new music out in 2018, how do you think you guys have changed as a band since 2016?

Since releasing ‘Pussy Orientated’ we’ve spent a lot of time developing our sound and writing new material to signify the effort we’ve put in this past year to get what we would call our signature sound. We’ve also just become a whole lot closer as friends, we’re practically family, which is the highlight of it all.

RR: And you guys have played alongside some pretty big names like The Jungle Giants and Grinspoon, what’s it like being on tour with such massive names in the industry?

It’s unreal! We’re so lucky to have been on some pretty incredible lineups since starting out.

RR: It’s no secret that breaking into the music industry is quite a hard task, so what is it that has kept you guys motivated to make it to this point?

While it is tough, this is something we’re all really passionate about and the drive we share to make it helps us keep kicking along. The ride can and has been discouraging at times, but this is something we really fuckin’ want, and we wanna work hard at it to get it. So that’s what we do!

RR: So Dave Ruby Howe from Triple J Unearthed is quoted as saying you guys are possibly his new favourite band, how does it feel to have that kind of recognition?

I gotta say, we were all pretty stunned by that one. Having people like Dave making those kinds of comments is unreal. Nick Oliveri called us his daughters too, so..

RR: Have you guys got any more plans for the rest of 2018 that you’re able to tell us about or give us some hints perhaps?

We have a whole lot in store for 2018 in terms of shows and new music, as mentioned before we are releasing an LP later on in the year, and we’re also psyched to say we’re joining Bleeding Knees Club and Together Pangea on tour in march/early april! As for everything else we have in the works, you’re gonna have to wait and see!
