The scallywags that are Bootleg Rascal returned to the Nation’s Capital for their second Shake ‘N’ Bake Tour at Transit Bar. The lads electrified the crowd with their “white ghetto dub reggae” style as lead singer Carlos states, and threw some fresh tunes in the mix which got the crowd frothing.
RABBIT RADIO: So I read that you boys met in a seedy back room at a Sydney gig bonding over your love for music and tacos. What gig were you at and how did this eventuate to the Rascals today?
JIMMY – Well it actually wasn’t a gig, it was more of a weekly business meeting where Jack and I would go to a dive strip bar - the kind where strippers go to permanently retire. So you would get a burger, chips and a pint for $10 and watch a strip show. And we see Carlos in the back room literally polishing the floors with his Walkman on and we heard him sing a few songs and we’re thinking ‘I dunno about his song choice’, like Bublѐ or something, but he could sing alright. So we thought ‘maybe we could do something with this fella?!’ And then bonded over a few tacos, watched a few strips and the rest is history. CARLOS – What more do you want? RR – So the ultimate lad’s night? JIMMY – It wasn’t even a lad’s night, just business as usual really. Before they kicked off the tour they released a dope acoustic version of their latest track ‘On A Low’ which has given us a sweet taste of what’s to come off their new album. RR: Can you tell us how ‘On A Low’ came about? JACK - That was a demo I had for a while and we were working on it in the studio where it kind of popped out. And it came together pretty easily in comparison to a lot of our other stuff. JIMMY - That’s pretty much how most of our stuff turns out I think. Just starts out with an idea and we all add our bit and role with it. RR: Can you tell us a bit about the upcoming album and what we should expect from Bootleg? JIMMY – Lots of synthesizer. CARLOS – It’s different. RR – Different to what you have previously done? CARLOS – In a way. There’s a continuation in the sound that we were using in the first album, but we’re definitely experimenting with different things I think. JIMMY – It’s a follow up. We’re opening a few new doors. CARLOS – Shutting a lot of other ones as well. JIMMY – Burning a lot of bridges. JACK – We’re good at that. JIMMY - I hope that our bridge stays intact, at least until the end of the night, that’d be great! The loose scoundrels continue their booze infused celebrations after touring with some of the Sure Shaker crew including their brothers, Sticky Fingers, selling out shows across Oz and overseas. The trio shed some light (and dirt) on what it was like touring with StiFi given the band’s latest news of their ‘indefinite hiatus’. JIMMY - It’s always good. We’ve been mates with them now for a very long time. It just feels like a bunch of the boys getting together and having a few laughs. CARLOS - It’s like a big family because you spend so much time in a band together with the same group of guys all the time. You get really close really quick. JACK - Sometimes too close. CARLOS – Definitely sometimes too close. You see things you never want to see.. JIMMY – Smells as well! We’re not meant to do #2’s on the tour bus and Frost would be the usual culprit. He’s also a serial pest for blocking toilets within 30 seconds of arriving. Instantly it’s a no go, it’s lovely. RR: Within the band and the Sure Shaker fam, you’ve got to sleep with one, kill one, and marry one. GO! JIMMY – I’d probably sleep with Jack because he’s got the best rig out of all of us. Could you combine the other two? RR – There’s no restrictions. JIMMY - Maybe marry Carlos and kill myself afterwards?! CARLOS – Literally just end it! I’d f*ck Crabs, kill all of them and marry Beaker. JACK – F*ck Az, marry Az, and then kill him. CARLOS – Full serial killer shit. JACK – Keep that to yourself. JIMMY – That’s off the record… RR: RABBIT have a dare for you guys. To finish the night with a bang in the Nation’s Capital, would one of you boys step up and do a shoey at the end of your set? * silence * CARLOS – …Why is everyone looking at me?! JIMMY – Depends what kind of shoe, what type of shoe is it? Your boot? RR – They’re pretty grubby, these have made it through festy’s. CARLOS – Wowww, how many festy’s? JACK – Carlos will do it out of your shoe! JIMMY – Carlos, you are doing the shoey. CARLOS – F*ck! Can we make it something strong? JIMMY – Get a midori spritzer. CARLOS – Yeah that’ll do. The first midori shoey! Yewww. The rowdy bunch made it a memorable night igniting sick guitar riffs and finishing it with a bang with Carlos charging through RABBIT’s shoey and making (most) Aussies proud. The lads will finish their loose escapades around the country in early February where you can get a sweet taste of Bootleg’s fresh new tunes (and not so fresh shoes).
