Frontwoman, Eliza Katt from Eliza & The Delusionals took some time out to have a quick chat with Rabbit Radio’s Tayla Sudall about their nominations in both the Queensland Music Awards and Gold Coast Music Awards; and how the use of SingStar at the age of 6 paved the way for Eliza into the music world! Catch the interview below!
RR: Hey Eliza, how are you going?

EK: I’m good, how are you?

RR: I’m good thank you! So, how’s your week been, are you guys pumped for your show tonight with The Creases and The Jungle Giants?

EK: Yeah it’s gonna be really fun, super excited for that!

RR: Um, and have you guys been doing anything to get yourselves jacked up before the show?

EK: Not particularly –laughs- just been like, thinking about it I guess

RR: Yeah no, that’s cool, do you have any kind of like, pre-show routine normally or do you just go into it with whatever?

EK: Aww, yeah we usually just kind of like, I dunno, I guess we just have a bit of like back stage banter I guess, to like, keep the vibes up! But yeah, we kind of just get together and go into it!

RR: Aw that’s cool. And so, of course you guys have just been nominated for a huge three Gold Coast Music Awards - well deserved of course – so have you guys celebrated that at all yet?

EK: Um, yeah, we were super stoked about that um, we haven’t had a chance to be all together yet but um, yeah we’re definitely keen for the awards ceremony because it’s always a really fun time and just the whole vibe and it’s really cool being nominated for three, it’s amazing!

RR: Yeah it’ll be awesome and you guys are playing there as well so that should be really cool too

EK: Yeah! Yeah definitely!

RR: And so on top of all of that, you guys have just found out as well that you are nominated for a Queensland Music Award and that’s huge! So, are you guys planning anything special tonight after the show or anything to celebrate?

EK: Yeah, I think we definitely will, we’re super stoked about that! It’s really, really cool to be nominated for a Q Music Award like, yeah, it’s just awesome! Very, very cool!

RR: Yeah you guys should be really proud it’s awesome. And you guys have been really busy this year you kicked off the year playing Falls Festival in Byron, you just wrapped up a tour last month supporting Tiny Little Houses and you guys have got a bunch of festival shows coming up over the next couple of months, so do you guys ever get any down time? –laughs-

EK: Um –laughs- we’ve had a couple of um, we’ve a had a few weeks off at the moment which has been pretty good, but sometimes I think it feels like it’s on a constant roll but I guess we just really love always being able to do that and we’re just really lucky that we can be doing that, so even though is does get super tiring sometimes…

RR: Yeah, what do you guys like to do when you do finally get time to yourselves, do you guys hang out or spend time alone?

EK: A bit of both I’d say! We do a lot of rehearsing even when we’re having the down time and I just like to do a lot of writing, I feel like when we’re not touring I’m just at home writing um, and then you know we go to a lot of gigs together as well like, you know, our friends things and like, touring bands and stuff which is really cool so yeah, pretty much just getting inspiration from everywhere I guess

RR: Yeah that’s awesome, um, and so I mean the conversation on women in the music industry is obviously huge right now, so what’s it like for you being the front woman of the band?

EK: I feel really lucky that I can be um, I have the opportunity to be at the front of a band and inspire other women and empower other women to you know, do their own band and really sort of like do their own thing. I feel like really lucky to be able to be in this position at the moment where I can sort of you know, help… I guess help inspire other women to sort of do that as well

RR: Yeah! It’s really cool to see you up there just kickin’ ass so that’s cool –laughs-

EK: Thank you! –laughs-

RR: Who do you think are your biggest influences in the music industry?

EK: Well, I basically got into bands because of Hayley Williams from Paramore she’s like, been my idol forever, I’m sure a lot of girls feel the same –laughs-

RR: Yeah she’s a queen!

EK: Yeah, she sure is, she’s amazing! Um, but then I guess in more recent times Catfish and the Bottlemen were really like, that first album they did was really the main inspiration for starting this band, sort of, cause like I was starting it off when they dropped that first album and that kind of helped me like solidify the sound that I really wanted to sort of carry on with, which was really cool so I ended up getting that album art actually tattooed on me –laughs- yeah so, they’ve probably been one of the biggest influences but there’s just so many like I’m just constantly inspired by a lot of um, you know, Australian acts that are coming up, artists like Alex Lahey and Maddy Jane who are like, coming up just writing these amazing songs and like, absolutely killing it you know, everywhere

RR: Yeah

EK: It’s super inspiring to watch those people really grow and just write these like, amazing songs

RR: Yeah it’s cool you can kind of, I guess you could lump yourself in with all of those girls now as well because um, like, Amy Shark won the Q Music Award last year so, you guys are up there with them as well now it’s awesome!

EK: -laughs- yeah that’s really nice, thank you!

RR: -laughs- um so when did you decide that this was something you wanted to do with your life?

EK: Um, ever since I started… I guess I started singing when I was like, a kid playing SingStar um –laughs-

RR: -laughs-

EK: That was like, my childhood I was like “this is the coolest fucking thing ever” and then when I, ah I think it was grade 6 my friend was like ‘aw come and join the school band and like, play bass guitar with me’ so like I got a bass guitar for Christmas and um, I was playing bass guitar for ages and then like I started learning the guitar and I did like bands in high school and stuff but I always knew that like, just from seeing people like Hayley Williams up there you know, in front of these huge crowds and like, just inspiring so many people I was like, I always knew that was what I wanted to do with life, so yeah

RR: No that’s awesome! –laughs- SingStar! I loved SingStar too –laughs-

EK: Oh my god it’s amazing, I was never any good at Guitar Hero but SingStar, mate, I was 100% at every song –laughs-

RR: Yep, yep –laughs- and so what do you think you’d be doing if you didn’t go down this path, did you ever have some kind of back up plan in the back of your head?

EK: Um, I mean, I’ve always been into Visual Arts but I have always kind of had that firm belief in my mind that if you have a back up plan I feel like, it kind of goes two ways, because I feel like it’s good in a responsible way to have a back up plan, but I’ve always been like, if I have a back up plan then I’m not putting 100% into what I actually want to do so, yeah, I do a little bit of art on the side I guess but it all just kind of ties into what my main thing is I suppose

RR: Yeah that’s cool, so you could totally make your own album artwork and stuff like that?

EK: -laughs- Aw I dunno if I’m good enough

RR: -laughs- so on top of all the shows you guys are playing all over the place, you guys managed to also make a film clip for your song 19 which is kind of just footage of you guys getting around on your gigs which is quite fitting right now I guess, but were you guys filming that footage with the intention of making it your film clip?

EK: At first, ‘cause there’s so much footage from this whole year and at first we were like, ‘cause we love filming like everything we do –laughs- so we were kind of like you know, we’ll film this and we’ll do a little tour diary and then it kind of didn’t come together the way we wanted it too so we were like just sort of building up all this footage and we were like oh my god, we should totally do a really cool music video since we’ve been touring pretty much all year um, so yeah, it kind of all fell into place it was really, really exciting

RR: Yeah that’s cool, yeah, I like seeing those kind of like behind the scenes moments and so I enjoyed the film clip it’s cool!

EK: Aw thank you! Yeah we love it as well that’s why we’re so keen to do it ourselves ‘cause it’s like, I think it’s like the coolest video when you can just see like, you know, what happens in the travelling and things like that

RR: Yeah I think it helps the fans like, relate a bit more to you and that kind of thing so yeah, it’s good!

EK: For sure!

RR: And so you have a really cool style with your pink hair and the way you dress and it kind of got me thinking, what you’re into personally, so if you were stranded on an island what three things would you be taking with you?

EK: I would definitely take my dogs –laughs- I dunno if that counts as one thing because I have two

RR: Oh you can just lump ‘em in as one, that’s alright –laughs-

EK: Yeah well my dogs, I couldn’t live without them! Um, and my guitar and probably um, something I could watch RuPaul’s Drag Race on –laughs- and I’ll be sweet!

RR: -laughs- get some WiFi, get a dongle over there –laughs-

EK: Yeah exactly, it’ll be fine, as long as I have my dogs and RuPaul’s Drag Race, I’ll be fine!

RR: -laughs- everything’s gonna be okay! Aw well Eliza thank you so much for taking some time to have a quick chat with me and a massive congratulations to you and the band on your nominations for Queensland Music Awards and Gold Coast Music Awards, um, and of course best of luck with all of your upcoming shows!

EK: Thank you so much! Thank you for having me!

RR: No thank you, I hope you have a good afternoon!
