Baby Shower debut single ‘Everything sucks and it’s everyone’s fault but mine’ with madcap music video!
Review by Nath Luke
So tbh I had never heard of the Melbourne punk band Baby Shower before about 2 days ago.
A friend of a friend shared the video clip for their new single and they are making a stake at being my favourite new band! The band is Katie Lovelock on Drums, Sean Kirkpatrick - Bass / vocals and Alison Erlanger - Electric ukulele /vocals.
Clever industry nerds tell me that statistically a music video clip is of less value these days, with short spans of attention, 15 second Tik Toks dominating the minds of the kids and the golden era of MTV long behind us. But as this clip unfolds I am treated to a seriously enjoyable, fun, hilarious and irreverent music video which to me confirms that the medium is not dead at all. Max Headroom would’ve bloody loved this one.
The video, shot by David McKinnar is packed with so many iconic moments. As the video starts the trio stroll into shot walking down a suburban Melbourne Street. Alison takes off her Thrasher hoodie, to reveal her Thrasher long sleeve which she takes off to reveal her Thrasher T shirt. That got the first lol from me.
Cut fast to an epic single punch door knock followed by a Beastie Boy entry pose as they crash a Stepford wives baby shower. I knew here that this was my sort of video. Sean dressed in homage to Narre Warren party icon Corey Worthington cemented that thought. No doubt there are more numerous clever references hidden away in the clip. My lowbrow humour hit peak laffs as Alison sticks both fingers up… at the baby.
The party goes way south from there but you will have to get on and finish watching it to find out the details.
The track is why we are really here. It is punk, fun punk, taking the piss but in a very cool way. The best punk bands are fun, but a bit menacing with chaos not too far under the surface, and Baby Shower dishes up this attitude by the bucketful. The message of the track is brutally simple. But is it ironic or a real glimpse into the self centre of a youth determined to scream and kick at the walls of society? Or do Certainly there is so much to yell about at the moment with right wing douche bags in charge everywhere and the rich and powerful becoming more and more brazen in their entitlement. Baby Shower are our saviors, or just fun, we shall see.
A seriously strong fun punk debut track which has us just absolutely gagging for more.
The single was produced and mixed by Alex Moses (Columbus) and mastered by Jay Maas (Citizen/Title Fight).
You can catch Baby Shower live nowhere because fuck Covid 19.
