NEW RELEASES: HOW IS IT OCTOBER ALREADY? The year might be running away from us at an alarming rate but let’s not dwell on it. This week we presenting the latest workings of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Methyl Ethyl, Clea, Lala Lala, Eliza & the Delusionals, Tiana Khasi, BADBADNOTGOOD (with Little Dragon) and Sharon Van Etten.
METHYL ETHEL – SCREAM WHOLE (4AD)
Member of Methyl Ethel 1: People say we’re ‘art rock’…
Member of Methyl Ethel 2: Do they? Are we? Yeah y’know what we are!
Member of Methyl Ethel 1: Yeah sure, we are! We’re art rock! Everything Is Forgotten is art rock!
Member of Methyl Ethel 2: We are, we are! Right on! Okay, cool.
Member of Methyl Ethel 1: Let’s do it again!

SHARON VAN ETTEN – COMEBACK KID (JAGJAGUWAR)
“Past records have been heartbreak records or break-up records,” Etten revealed in a recent interview with NME. “This is still an album of love songs, but about the state of the world while trying to stay positive for another human being.” Sharon’s talking about motherhood but just as equally framing the musical and tonal shift of her just-announced record too. Speaking as a fan of the cool, mother-of-all-brooding Van Etten moments this writer might have to take a little time to transition.
LALA LALA – SCARY MOVIE (HARDLY ART)
For those not up to speed Lala Lala’s The Lamb is shaping up to be one of 2018’s critical favs. Emilie West may cut raw and minimal music, but the emotion hangs heavy. Heart laid bare she’s poured over every microdetail. Her lyrical outlook is deep, an interrogation of self in the wake of crisis. She can put it across and, for all the faux sincerity which drives popular music, that’s something you can’t fake.
UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA – HANOI 6 (JAGJAGUWAR)
A Vietnamese jam session gets the full album treatment. If Sex & Food was a bit light on the avant/jazz/pysch for UMO fans, this first track from the new record rings more than ready to accommodate.
BADBADNOTGOOD & LITTLE DRAGON – TRIED (INNOVATIVE LEISURE)
More BADBADNOTGOOD IV studio sessions?! This time a collab with Little Dragon. Both groups we hope to be hearing more as we nudge out of 2018 and closer into a new year.
ELIZA AND THE DELUSIONALS – JACKIE (INDEPENDENT)
Dogs, the secret and hidden muses of popular music. Usually, they’re hiding in plain sight, misinterpreted as lovers of romantic cliché. This too is another song about a dog, losing one and the whole emotional trip.
CLEA – DREAMING (MIRROR)
Heartsick longing and ornate pop decorate the latest from Brisbane’s Clea.
TIANA KHASI – NUKETOWN (SOUL HAS NO TEMPO)
A classic putdown delivered with cool ambivalence and ambient sonics.
