How the hell are you? This week's tracks arrive courtesy of Sunflower Bean, Crepes, Dirty Fences, Oneohtrix Point Never, Royal Trux (!), San Mei and The Beatles.
SUNFLOWER BEAN – COME FOR ME (LIBERATOR/MOM+POP)
Heya Kid! You like Dylan and Fleetwood Mac? This band is IT. Their last two records anyway, but what about a bit of Kool & The Gang FUNK mixed in their too? Try ‘Come For Me’ and if that’s your dish there’s a whole EP, King Of The Dudes to follow. Due date? January 25.
L.A. WITCH – SLEEP (SUICIDE SQUEEZE)
Octubre is the burn of cheap whiskey, the hot kiss of a desert, LA Woman, the wandering eyes of the carnal beast and the tear of a broken heart. ‘Sleep’ is its second track.
DIRTY FENCES – HEAVEN IS TONIGHT (PISSFART)
Ramones and Kiss. Never again are those two bands gonna crop up in the same sentence so these New Yorkers’ ahead-of-tour-compilation cassette is at least that’s worth a listen we think. Don’t you?
CREPES – AS YOU GO (SPUNK)
CREPES RELEASED A WHOLE RECORD LAST WEEK AND WE DIDN’T WRITE A DARNED THING ABOUT IT. Well that was silly. Here’s In Cahoots.
ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER– LOVE IN THE TIME OF LEXAPRO (WARP)
Dan Lopatin is one of those border-expanding artists. He comes from a music-soaked background, has plenty of Avant leanings and creates uncompressing yet accessible visions. (What was ‘Black Snow’ but the most out-there pop song 2018’s listeners had ever heard?) Ultimately he wants to meet you in the middle. And where you arrive at on ‘Lexapro’ is a kind ambient-prog, different in sound but not too far in spirit and vision from those early Warp Records’ Artificial Intelligence compilations. Not talking about the contents even just the idea, maybe just that cover of the first one where the robot is leaning back in a living room, deep in their armchair and smoking as they listen to their hi-fi sound system adjacent a stacked collection of vinyl. Beautiful covers, maybe some kinda reference to Radiohead would have been more direct and tothepoint but forget all that and just know that the new EP he’s been working on is also called Love In The Time Of Lexapro.
THE BEATLES – GLASS ONION (APPLE)
That time Lennon lyrics got meta.
SAN MEI – SHADOWS (L X V I)
Gold Coast local Mei’s new EP is out and it’s a solid effort. ‘Shadows’ is a new cut. Of the record, this is what she had to say: “The title ‘Heaven’ speaks to that state of being wrapped up in another world and untied to logic or reason."
ROYAL TRUX – EVERY DAY SWAN (LIBERATOR/MOM+POP)
The down and dirtiest rocking band to turn out a record since Johhny Thunders bit it, T.Rex checked out and The Stones kicked junk. This pair may have put their most decadent of days behind them too, but they still know their way around a sneering lyric and sleazy guitar line Put on ya scuffed-up leather jacket Betty, it’s time to dine at the beggars banquet.
