In no short order, we present to you the fresh sounds of Peter Bibby, Mr Twin Sister, GØGGS, Terry, Neil and Liam Finn, Spiritualized, Vinyl Williams, and Toronto’s Ellis.
SPIRITUALIZED – HERE IT COMES (THE ROAD) LET’S GO (PIAS)
For those unfamiliar Spiritualized were the 1990s' equivalent of Unknown Mortal Orchestra - a Spaceman 3 offshoot that pieced together its own spaced-out sound and got noticed. Their latest music presents another left turn, a fractured series of directions and style yet still in conjunction with a continuation of their neo-psychedelic bent. No doubt the new record ‘Here It Comes’ is leading into will take some time to piece together and appreciate, but it’s already floating promisingly within the mind’s imagination. NEIL AND LIAM FINN – GHOSTS (INTERIA/PIAS) If there’s an immutable law of Finns, it’s that they always work better paired. ELLIS - THE DRAIN (INDEPENDENT) Linnea Siggelkow is a Canadian artist. Her work plays easily beside the likes of Land of Talk or Soccer Mommy - the latter of which she's supported on tour. 'The Drain' begins with giddying romance before uncoiling with longing and a heart wrenched ache, that feeling of unbridled love etched within all of its element shades. VINYL WILLIAMS - LANSING (REQUIM POUR UN TWISTER) An LA native somewhere between Tame Impala and Flying Lotus. But then that might be reigning it in. PETER BIBBY – WORK FOR ARSEHOLES (SPINNING TOP) Reading an article in Rolling Stone the other day about the flourishing of brand partnerships in modern music kind of left an empty feeling. It let in that lingering notion that we're living in an age where nearly every second moment feels accompanied by a brand activation. In the wake of that whole feeling, some honest-to-truth songwriting makes a welcome breath. Peter Bibby isn’t intent an artist intent on working for The Establishment, how he'll manage he doesn't quite know but Finger on the truth he tackles some of these anxieties head on. That is before diving into his usual flashes of grand, paranoiac and irresistibly drunken poetics. MR TWIN SISTER – ECHO ARMS (INFINITE BEST) Not too sure on the specifics of Mr Twin Sister other that they're an outfit is from New York and that their new song has been out floating around the internet for what would have to be clocking in at a few weeks now. A quick dig also reveals an older track of theirs was sampled by Kendrick. But what's truly important is that it’s a banger. GØGGS – PRE STRIKE SWEEP (IN THE RED) GØGGS are a punk outfit within which Ty Segall sporadically surfaces on guitar. So as you might imagine there’s plenty of fuzz sparking about the track’s devastating downward spirals. Rapt. TERRY – MALICE MEN (ANTI FADE) Henry Rollins loves this band. Why? Because laid out simply they’re great songwriters. For those looking to step further into Terry or the Anti Fade consciousnesses New Centre of the Universe, Vol. 3. Is where it’s at. Mastered by Mikey Young.
