It feels like we’ve got new music rolling in from just about every corner of the country this week. In addition to new track ‘No Matter !’ from Brisbane’s Jouk Mistrow, fellow Queenslanders DZ Deathrays have dropped a new tune and some details on their forthcoming LP. Further south Sydney legends Body Type have capped off the Thirty Days of Yes campaign with excellent new tune ‘My Place’. Bubbling up from Victoria comes new sounds from Angie McMahon and Alice Skye. Skipping across to Western Australia we’ve also thrown in an absolute riffer from Perth newcomers Spacey Jane. San Fran fuzz merchants Oh Sees may not be waving any Australian flags, but they’ve also dropped a dungeon strolling clip that’s too difficult to ignore. Neither is Angel Olsen, but we’re including her latest number ‘Sans’ here too!

OH SEES – NITE EXPO (CASTLE FACE RECORDS)

Having dropped their latest long-player Orc back in August, Thee Oh Sees (now the Oh Sees) have treated fans to a new clip for the album’s second track ‘Nite Expo’ As with the bulk of material from their new record, Expo veers slightly away from their typical garage rock and skews towards ‘70s prog and metal machismo. As for the Sword & Sorcery visuals, well there’s a good reason for those too. “Animation and role-playing games were a huge part of my youth, so I was really excited to work on this with [director] Alex Theodoropulos and make a fun Halloween video that harkens back to the real simple times. Imagination running wild and no thoughts of a heavy world,” frontman John Dwyer explains.

DZ DEATHRAYS – TOTAL MELTDOWN (I OH YOU)

Winding down from the epic licks of ‘Shred For Summer’ DZ’s latest draws listeners into a more claustrophobic headspace. That said, in terms of sonic impact it’s every bit a straight-ahead rocker. With the single also comes news that the pair’s third LP Bloody Lovely will be dropping February 2nd, 2018.

ANGIE MCMAHON - SLOW MOVER (INDEPENDENT)

Over the course of a month, an undeniable buzz has been building behind Angie McMahon’s debut track. Pairing smouldering vocals, lovesick and guitar hooks with a knack for pop songcraft ‘Slow Mover’ never misses a beat. Pulling back on the borderline of schmaltz, the Melbournian delivers a blissful helping of radio-friendly heartache.

ANGEL OLSEN – SANS (JAGJAGUWAR)

Ahead of the release of compilation LP Phases this Friday Olsen has shared a final sonic morsel. Penned between 2014’s Pen Your Fire for No Witness and My Woman, ‘Sans’ is a simple proposition which showcases Olsen inhabiting the stripped-down and folksier tone of her earlier works. While it’s lacking in a little polish, this artist’s sweetly wearied vocals are, as ever, more than capable of standing upon their own strength.

BODY TYPE – MY PLACE (THIRTY DAYS OF YES)

With Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey closing today, the Thirty Days of Yes campaign draws closer to its conclusion. Staying true to their exceptional track record throughout the campaign, these outspoken YES advocates have continued to deliver the goods. In all they’ve dropped no less than 49 tracks in support of the cause. A standout amongst this final comes courtesy of Sydney newcomers Body Type. Titled ‘My Place’ it sends things out with hypnotic flair, laying down dreamy vocals amidst dense layers of spacious texture.

SPACEY JANE - FEEDING THE FAMILY (INDEPENDENT)

This next track is another one which has been kicking around for a little while yet has steadily been building some respectable momentum. ‘Feeding the Family’ showcases some expressive riffing from Perth newcomers Spacey Jane. The track forms part of their No Way to Treat an Animal EP which should be dropping in the coming month. It plays well with the guitar pop leanings of Methyl Ethyl or Car Seat Headrest, but there’s an undeniably heavier - Kings of Leon perhaps - vibration.

JOUK MISTROW – NO MATTER ! (INDEPEDENT)

Brisbane by way of Bundaberg outfit Jouk Mistrow have just dropped third EP End This Mess. On the back of crashing lead singles ‘Deers’, ‘Void On Return’ and ‘The Idealist’ their third extended player collects an additional two tracks. Of the pair, ‘No Matter !’ charges forward with typical momentum, coursing outward as a mass of scrappy hooks and reckless energy.

ALICE SKYE – POETRY BY TEXT (CAAMA)

22-year-old singer-songwriter Alice Skye delivers songs of impeccable simplicity and charm. ‘Poetry by Text’ sees the Melbournian artist recounting an earnest tale of screen mediated romance. Drifting vocals put a modern twist on an age-old thematic of love and confusion.
