It’s been a bumper year for The Babe Rainbow and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Both have been building profile in the US while turning out some of their strongest work to date. To celebrate the fact, we’re sending a new clip from the former and the latest jammer from the latter straight your way. Joining the pair on label Flightless, heavy rocking mainstays Stonefield have also released ‘Delusion’ ahead of a forthcoming third LP. To round things out we’ve also snuck in a few local goodies from Sleep Club, Toni and the Stonehearts, Good Boy, Crum and The Dollar Bill Murrays.

THE BABE RAINBOW – MONKEY DISCO (FLIGHTLESS)

The first of three helpings from our friends at Flightless this week is a new clip for ‘Monkey Disco’ from The Babe Rainbow’s self-titled LP. Accompanying this grooving amalgam of paisley pop and vintage dance shuffle comes some equally body moving visuals. Shake it!

SLEEP CLUB – CUT YOU (INDEPENDENT)

Emerging from a haze of dreamy reverberance, Brisbane’s Sleep Club have delivered an excellent debut. A tapestry of pop melody and endless layering of experimental sounds the track’s spectral vocals arrive resolute but can barely conceal an enveloping sense of gloom and heartache. Sitting somewhere between shoegaze atmospherics and gauzed-out pop, the track’s instrumentals swirl in pool of detuned synth and sparkling guitar play.

GOODY BOY - 1972 VW SUPERBUG (BARELY DRESSED RECORDS)

The fiery bent of Good Boy’s latest feels like it recaptures the spark and impact of 2016’s ‘Poverty Line’. Chronicling a return journey to regional Queensland, this world wearied track comes soaked in nostalgia and punky defiance. Its languid tempo carries a feeling of smouldering desolation decorated with torn dreams and broken promise.

KING GIZZARD AND THE LIZARD WIZARD – ALL IS KNOWN (FLIGHTLESS)

Nobody can accuse King Gizzard of taking it easy. In the year so far, they’ve dropped four revelatory albums and even non-fanatics would find it hard to deny that they’ve tweaked their signature sound just enough to keep things interesting. Cosmic riffer ’All Is Known’ arrives as one of two surprise singles. It blasts forward as monolithic mass of lyrical content, powerhouse rhythm and bone-crunching riffs. The track seems to carry the promise that whatever the group’s fifth and final album holds it’s sure to see them exiting 2017 on a high.

STONEFIELD – DELUSION (FLIGHTLESS)

They’re back, hard and heavy as ever. Stonefield have joined forces with Flightless to release latest single ‘Delusion’. Paying homage to the harder edge of genre figureheads Sabbath and Zep, the sisters deliver crushing retake of the vividly adventurous lysergia of 2016’s As Above, So Below. "Delusion was inspired by an overwhelming feeling of knowing you are a speck in the universe, getting lost in your own mind” the band disclose in the accompany press release. “We ventured away from classic song structure to create more of a journey, exploring synth sounds to support our love of a hypnotic sounding riff."

CRUM - TEMPORARY (
INDEPENDENT)

As this clip’s murky lighting and pained yowls would suggest, local legends Crum are striking out along the Nirvana-Violent Soho axis. To their credit ‘Temporary’ is a potent concoction of gut-wrenched vocals and devastating guitar lines.

TONI AND THE STONEHEARTS – NO TURNING BACK (INDEPENDENT)

With acts like RACKETT and newcomers Toni and The Stone Hearts it feels like Sydney is succumbing to a bit of a back-to-basics rock revival. Debut strutter ‘No Turning Back’ bristles with energy and attitude. It’s a goodtime party anthem to be sure, but it also reminds us that despite the turbulent year it’s been there’s still a little utility to be had in throwing our troubles to the wind and cutting loose.

THE DOLLAR BILL MURRAYS – DANCING WITH DEATH (VALLEY HEAT RECORDS)

The Dollar Bills have the harder edge of the indie sound down-pat. ‘Dancing with Death’ rumbles out with chunky Queens of the Stone Age style riffs and airy vocal gravitas. It’s one of the bouncier numbers we’ve heard from these Brisbane locals thus far, perhaps there’s just a hint of a Strokes-like swagger threading throughout the track’s heavier vibration? A definite must for fans of QOTSA or Royal Blood.
