NEW RELEASES! If any more music drops this week, we’ll quit. But seriously, this time around we’ve collected some great numbers from Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile, Connan Moccasin, Nice Biscuit, Death Valley Girls, The Lemon Twigs, Johnny Hunter and The Kinks!
NICE BISCUIT – DIGITAL MOUNTAIN SPARROW (ORANGE PLANET)

Adding some guitar weaving feel, the latest from Brisbane’s Nice Biscuit plays out a little like Mazzy Star while also harkening back to the group’s own earlier singles.

DEATH VALLEY GIRLS – DISASTER (IS WHAT WE’RE AFTER) (SUICIDE SQUEEZE)

Primal rock from LA’s Death Valley Girls. They play it rough. And if that’s not enough to get the gut watering here’s a clip of Iggy Pop eating a burger.

CONAN MOCCASIN – CON CONN WAS IMPATIENT (MEXICAN SUMMER/REMOTE CONTROL)

Waterfall don’t change your ways.

KURT VILE - LOADING ZONES (MATADOR/REMOTE CONTROL)

Vile’s back and his playin’ sounds a little like Tom Petty. Plus, there’s lashings of what could only be likened to that Talk Box effect from Peter Frampton’s ‘Show Me The Way’. Kurt Comes Alive? He’s a classicist but doesn’t mean you can’t groove on it.

THE KINKS – THE TIME SONG (BMG)

When British Invasion peers The Beatles and just about everyone else made forays into psychedelia’s groovy fad, The Kinks went someplace else. The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society didn’t sell well. In fact, it was a flop. Rightly so, who could reconcile the cosmic leap of ‘Walter’ with ‘You Really Got Me’? But over the course of half a century the realisation has of this records stature has dawned. Not only is not The Kinks highest selling record it’s come to be regarded as one of the period’s/rock songwriting’s/The Kinks'/the album format’s greatest moments. And apparently there’s still some worthwhile odds ‘n’ ends floating about in the archives cos here comes the boxed set.

JOHNNY HUNTER – 1995 (BREAK EVEN)

Johnny Hunter announce their Break Even debut. There’s ‘80s post punk attitude but its delivered with enough chutzpah to walk with a rock strut. But ain’t it just that there’s some bashing pub rock seeping in through the corners as well. To top it all off they’re singin' about the ‘90s.

THE LEMON TWIGS – THE FIRE (REMOTE CONTROL/4AD)

If The Rolling Stones did Tommy. No wait, that could be a little too glib because while the Lemon Twigs are musicians studied of the past they’re just as equally adept at extravagantly kicking convention to the curb and making their own rules. This new record takes Do Hollywood’s listeners everywhere except where they’ve been before.

COURTNEY BARNETT – HOUSES (SPOTIFY)

With an ever-increasing mastery of the rock form and a voice that cuts through to the heart, Barnett returns with a new single. ‘Houses’ isn’t as much a new number as a cover of one of Neil Young’s Canadian contemporaries Elyse Weinberg. Given Young’s contributions to the original recorded version, Courtney’s delivery comes equally expired. It’s some of her most expressive fretwork yet.

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE – JAKE AND ME (DOMINO)

Cutting washes of colour spill across this new album-and-documentary-score from a Panda Bear-less Animal Collective. Fans who dug the electro-acoustic leanings of Avey Tare’s Eucalyptus are going to find more than a few welcome similarities.
