GRIZZLY BEAR - 'MOURNING SOUND' (Sony Music Australia)
Grizzly Bear have announced the August 18th release of PAINTED RUINS, their highly anticipated fifth full-length album, and first for RCA Records through Sony Music Entertainment Australia. In addition, the band has shared new album track ‘Mourning Sound’. That song follows ‘Three Rings’, another track from PAINTED RUINS released earlier this month and hailed as “spellbinding” (Rolling Stone), “insistent” (The New York Times), and “a sonically ambitious return” (Pigeons & Planes).
Grizzly Bear – Chris Bear, Ed Droste, Daniel Rossen and Chris Taylor – spent the better part of two years writing and recording the eleven new compositions on PAINTED RUINS. Taylor produced the album with sessions taking place primarily at Allaire Studios in upstate New York, and at various locations around Los Angeles, including his own Terrible Studios.
THE PREATURES - 'GIRLHOOD' (Universal Music Australia)
That’s all it takes for beloved Sydney band the Preatures to announce their return with Girlhood, a song that deals withthe contradictions of modern womanhood while paying homage to the Divinyls, the Pretenders and the Angels.
The title track of the much-anticipated second record is driving and infectious; a call-to-arms for young women to become the heroine of their own story.
Singer Isabella “Izzi” Manfredi demands “Give me heroism, give me what is mine” with the knowing nonchalance you might expect from Chrissie Hynde or Chrissy Amphlett.
With guitarist and producer Jack Moffitt’s sophisticated take on a classic sound, and carried by the rhythm section of Thomas Champion on bass and drummer Luke Davison, the hard-touring band sound tighter than ever.
Girlhood references Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney’s memoir Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl – a brutally honest tale of navigating the music biz as a female artist – and the canon of feminist punk. But Izzi and the Preaturestranslate these concepts into something more playful.
VANILLA GORILLA - 'RAINBOW GIRL' (Independent)
Vanilla Gorilla started off playing in garages and school grounds in 2012, since then they have toured up and down the East Coast, with their own headline tours and festival slots. With E.P ‘Colour Flow’ under their belt and newest single ‘Rainbow Girl’ due for release in a couple of weeks, the future is looking swell as can be for the boys.
Speaking on the recording process of ‘Rainbow Girl’ the band commented; “We began by playing the song live, where bass, drums and rhythm guitar were recorded. Then Dylan (vocals/ guitar/effects) mixed it and added lead guitar and vocals over the top, and added effects when needed.” They added “It probably took 2 months all up to complete because we don't see each other very often - some of us have moved away for University”
THE DISTRICTS - 'IF BEFORE I WAKE' (Pod)
Rob Grote from the band says, "The lyrics were written the morning after actually waking up during a storm that felt like it was right over my room. It was refreshing to work on as a band because we had been talking about ideas of restraint and contrast, removing chord changes and toying with droning notes, and this one felt like we synthesized some of those ideas more by second nature as we had been exploring those ideas for a while at this point."
The distinctly intense sound of Popular Manipulations — charging guitars, thunderous drumming, and Grote’s searing vocals — was brought on by a few cited influences, from shoegaze’s aggressive swirl to the Velvet Underground’s impeccable drone-rock sound. But don’t mistake easy comparisons for a lack of originality: on Popular Manipulations, The Districts are in a lane entirely their own, exploring lyrical themes of isolation and abandonment in a way that ups the music’s already highly charged emotional quotient.
THE KITE STRING TANGLE - 'THE PRIZE' (Exist. Recordings)
With a sold-out tour in support of his recent single ‘Selfish’ behind him and an upcoming appearance at Splendour In The Grass, ARIA nominated artist The Kite String Tangle shares new single ‘The Prize’ feat. Bridgette Amofah (Rudimental). The track is accompanied by the news the producer will release his highly anticipated self-titled debut album on July 14th via Exist. Recordings / Warner Music Australia. Written, performed and self-produced, the album is mixed by Grammy Award Winning Engineer Eric J Dubowsky (Flume, Flight Facilities, SAFIA).
SMOKE RINGS - 'GO TO HELL' (Independent)
‘Go To Hell’ was recorded in Melbourne with Malcolm Besley (Northeast Party House / City Calm Down /The Creases) at both Soundpark and Rolling Stock Studios. John Davis (Gorillaz / Blur / Royal Blood) mastered the release. Talking about the track, frontman Shane O’keeffe says “the song is 99% about ‘the elephant in the room’ between you and someone you care about, and keeping your mouth shut because if you tell them what you really think they are most likely going to tell you to ‘Go to Hell’. The other 1%...well, it just rhymed.”
BATPISS - 'PARALYZED' (Poison City)
Paralyzed rages against the deep, disconcerting apathy of modern Australia. Scathing guitars kick hard into Batpiss's signature, wintery tremulous bass sound. This is true, classic Collingwood rock’n’roll at its most fearsome and fearless. Muddy and driving, ‘Paralyzed’ bears all the vitriolic hallmarks of frontman Thomy Sloane’s observant, critical lyrical drawl. A fiery concoction...
THE BLACK SEEDS - 'BETTER DAYS' (Remote Control Records)
While firmly based in the island grooves that inspired the birth of the band nearly two decades ago, TheBlack Seeds' sound casts a wide net, layering funk, soul, Afrobeat, and other eclectic elements over their dub/reggae foundations. It's "contemporary groove music with influences from soul and funk and reggae rhythms – and even rock..." explains guitarist/vocalist Barnaby Weir.
Lead track 'Better Days' is a Black Seeds classic and an exciting taster of what is to come from the new record. Rich with chugging guitars and soothing vocals, the track is warm with a positive message:
Better Days are calling, lonely nights are leaving. I see better Days, are just around the corner. No it wont be long till something good happens for ya.
“It’s a mantra and anyone who is struggling, to stay positive and not give up” says vocalist Barbnaby Weir. “To strive for what’s important to you.”
