Yet again another amazing week in music, Jack River has announce new single 'Fools Gold' ahead of her Electric Lady movement with all-female band nights in Sydney (next Friday 30 June at Metro Theatre) and Melbourne (next Saturday 1 July at The Corner) featuring Alex Lahey, Ali Barter, Gretta Ray, Bec Sandridge, Jack River, Body Type and Rackett. We also have new tracks from The Jensens, Parcels, I know Leopard & More...
THE JENSENS - 'EMOTION' (Habit Music)
Brissy legends The Jensens have just dropped their new track 'Emotion', These guys have been busy in their home studio self-producing the new track, and after taking a break from the live circuit they're ready to return to the stage, adding a new set of influences to their dynamic live shows. “Emotion is about how everything is falsifiable,” says the band of the track. “You could put your trust in one thing today, and another tomorrow, and then in a year realise it was all a waste of time – but also how there’s really no such thing as wasting time.” “It’s about being entranced and obsessed, feeling unnatural and rejecting the soul in favour of an image. Fear that living life through a lens will cause emotions to fade and detract from what is essential.”
PARCELS - 'OVERNIGHT" (Kitsuné Musique)
Hailing from the sun-drenched shores of Byron Bay, Berlin based electronic five-piece Parcels return with highly anticipated single 'Overnight'. Collaborating with none other than the planet’s most gifted robots Daft Punk, the single was written together before being produced by Daft Punk in the spring of 2017 at a secret location in Paris, France. Signing to Parisian tastemakers Kitsuné Musique last year, the release of ‘Overnight’ follows debut EP ‘Hideout’ and appearances at Woodford Folk Festival and Falls Festival at the end of 2016. ‘Overnight’ is a timeless statement of bighearted mentorship and of youthful inspiration, an effortless cut of summer bliss that shines with innate musicianship and unfurls its refined groove into the mellowest of nights.
I KNOW LEOPARD - 'LET GO' (Ivy League Records)
Dream-pop Sydney-siders I Know Leopard have just dropped a mesmerising new single ahead of their shows with Montaigne this July/August. ‘Let Go’ is a kaleidoscope of ethereal backing vocals, magical synths, groovy bass and anxious lyrics. Merging a retro sound with a smooth and fresh pop structure, the track is charmingly warm and fuzzy, as it layers catchy backing vocals with singer Luke O’Loughlin’s sweeping pop melodies, which see his voice grow from a deep rich tone to a sweet, floating falsetto. The accompanying video is similar in reflection – a cinematic torch that tracks and sheds light on the suburban lifestyle and pressures felt by youth – a dreamy narration with a darker side. Following last year’s dark-pop single ‘Rather Be Lonely‘, this latest offering is a delicious taste of what the future holds for the pop quartet. Catch them supporting Montaigne across the country next month
JACK RIVER - 'FOOLS GOLD' (I OH YOU)
Jack River presents her latest single ‘Fool’s Gold’. In her first release since EP Highway Songs No.2 River moves into alt pop territory with a song filled with glitter, grit and the feeling of moving on from a dream that’s lost its sparkle. Keeping true to her image evoking, yet bold lyrics, River jumps straight in, asking “You don’t like rollercoasters, how could you ever love a girl like me?”. Born on a lonely walk through the streets of New York, the song reflects the sounds of the early 2000s, inspired by Weezer, Tame Impala and MGMT. “I was alone in New York, chasing shiny things. The verses were spinning around my head and I would get purposefully lost so I could keep walking along, figuring out the song,” River says. “I was annoyed at myself for falling for the same things over again without them giving back. But I also knew how human it was to feel like that, and how I’d probably come up against this feeling again and again. I wanted to write a song for that emotion – the relentless humanity in thinking something is gold when it just isn’t – the hope and sadness and repetition, but the sweetness of truth once you find it. It’s also kinda about realising that your fool’s gold is often someone else’s gold and feeling momentarily lonely, but okay with it.' She has also this year launched Electric Lady – a movement with a focus on recognising women who excel in their fields. Electric Lady culminates with all-female band nights in Sydney (next Friday 30 June at Metro Theatre) and Melbourne (next Saturday 1 July at The Corner) featuring Alex Lahey, Ali Barter, Gretta Ray, Bec Sandridge, Jack River, Body Type and Rackett.
LANKS - 'COMFORTABLE' (Independent)
Multi-instrumentalist and producer LANKS returns with his highly-anticipated new single ‘Comfortable.’ The new track also joins the news LANKS will embark on a national headline single tour this August, playing intimate venues in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth. The single was written through the perspective of a close friend who works within the mental health industry. “Mental health is still an area we are learning how to approach and talk about, and it is not an easy job to just turn up to work for and then leave at the office. It is emotionally challenging.” Detailing her struggles with a particular case and the emotional effects, LANKS describes the tracks themes as “I wrote this song to remind her how selfless she is and was, helping someone else through such an incredibly hard time and shouldering so much of their struggles and despair. The ending was heartbreaking, but I wanted to focus on how great of a human she showed she was.” TOUR DATES: Get tickets from: www.lanksmusic.com/tour Sat, 19 Aug | Leadbelly, Sydney NSW Fri, 25th Aug | Black Bear Lodge, Brisbane QLD Sat, 26th Aug | Northcote Social Club, Melbourne VIC Sat, 2nd Sep | Jack Rabbit Slims, Perth WA BANOFFEE - 'RIPE' (Remote Control Records) “Banoffee started as a lifeboat, something to hop onto when the real world seemed too dangerous. As the project grew I realised I was no longer stepping onto a lifeboat. I had become the boat and the water. Every aspect of the world I created became an organ that served my machine. This release is the exploration of my new vehicle. I wanted to see through Banoffee, dance as it, smell as it. Humanness became irrelevant and melted into some sort of wonky life form. This record is the joining of two bodies; it’s the soundtrack to a process that began with ‘Ninja’ and is now this latest release. I created a world and it ate me. Sort of. Or I ate it. Working in new places forced me to try new techniques and approaches to writing- ripe came out of that. I wanted to make something that made my tongue itch like when I smell salt and vinegar chips, like grazed knees or sucking lemons. I’m testing my new machine and 'Ripe' is my first reaction.” - Banoffee 'Ripe', the first single to be released in almost two years, is a direct reflection of this newfound philosophy. Born in the LA studios of underground label 10K Islands, the track bounces around a manipulated vocal sample, a grating bassline scratch and infectious drops ANGUS & JULIA STONE - 'SNOW' (EMI Music Australia) Angus & Julia Stone return with Snow, the first taste of music to be unveiled from their forthcoming new album. The first notes of Snow are instantly transporting. The guitar is a scratchy, wooden memory laid over a moment of silence. The gently driving organ beat emerges and takes you with it, beginning the next enchanting journey with the brother-sister duo. "Snow is both of us. We sat down and wrote it together," Angus says. Snow emerged from the overall album recording process, and as Julia says, "It was quite magical because Angus and I have never spent that much time together, just the two of us. There's always at least an engineer or tour manager but the last phase of writing and recording was just eight weeks of him and me and the quiet of the land. It was a beautiful time."
WIDOWSPEAK - 'DOG' (Remote Control Records)
Widowspeak are excited to announce their new album, Expect The Best will be released Friday 25 August via Captured Tracks / Remote Control. Today the band reveals a video for the first single, 'Dog,' which premiered via NPR's First Watch. Widowspeak's Molly Hamilton told NPR the song is "about the compulsion to move on from things and places, even people, when you're not necessarily ready to. Sometimes, I get caught up in 'the grass is always greener' mentalities, or cling to an idea that 'I'd be happy if...' and then make a drastic change. Then, inevitably, I feel restless a few months later and it starts again." The video for 'Dog' was filmed and edited by musician/artist Otium, and filmed in Tacoma, WA. Widowspeak - Expect The Best is out Friday 25 August
