WHAT A WEEK! We’ve got releases coming out of just about everywhere but the places you might expect. Sky Ferreira has released her first new music in a dog's age while The Growlers have gone one better and dropped an entire album. In addition, we’ve collected another six must-hears from the Dumb Punts, IDLES, Molly Burch, Blood Orange, Jeff Mills and local favourites VOIID!
SKY FERREIRA – VOICES CARRY (INDEPENDENT)

Goes five years without releasing a record. Saturday gets into barney with label over access to Soundcloud. Monday she's releasing new music – well an ‘80s cover ‘demo’ of Til Tuseday’s ‘Voices Carry’– and teasing that there’s two completed singles to come. Never a dull moment!

THE GROWLERS – NEVEAH (BURGER RECORDS)

DID ANYONE KNOW THAT THE GROWLERS HAVE JUST DROPPED AN ENTIRE RECORD? We were not informed. Still digesting, but ‘Neveah’ is the opening track so jump right in.

IDLES – SAMARITANS (POD/INERTIA)

To quote some old timer from 1970: “With rock music they are using a musical and lyrical formula for selling ideas. With the right musical background the lyrics take on more profound meaning.” Is this not exactly what IDLES are achieving here?

THE DUMB PUNTS – PAY TO GET AHEAD (PISSFART)

1.“Mastered by Mikey Young.”
2. The Dumb Punts!
3. If either of the above names aren’t ringing true just know that both are an omen of the onset of another great Australian rock record.
4. The Big One will be arriving August 22.

VOIID – TWIN (INDEPENDENT)

VOIID put out pearler of single with ‘Not for You’ back in May. And now – before you can say “Hello Mrs. Jones how’s your old Bert’s lumbago?” – they’ve come back with another. ‘Twin’ sits along a similar axis - Ramones style punk, a few lines of visceral lyrics and a serving of ‘90s ephemera thrown in for good measure.

BLOOD ORANGE - CHARCOAL BABY (DOMINO)

Nowhere but on his own records does Dev Hynes run so wild with musical fantasy.

JEFF MILLS & TONY ALLEN – THE SEED (DECCA)

Here a techno architect and jazz great fuse electrical currents. The result is something else, a percussive rhythm guaranteed to lift you, the listener, up onto your feet and from their directly toward some greater elevation of cosmic conscious. Just listen!

MOLLY BURCH – WILD (CAPTURED TRACKS/REMOTE CONTROL)

“Wishful thinking’s got me blinded/Got me losing all control.” Burch is a lyricist, one with that rare enough of a talent to put it across in emotionally staggering entirety. Her soul’s a little weak from dreaming but rather than despair she’s celebrating the fact. Sounds a little like: The Chiffons’ ‘She’s So Fine’ twisting its narrative gaze back in on itself.
