New Releases for this week, loads of goodies as per usual. New material from Lisa Mitchell, Gordi, Born Joy Dead and loads more..
GORDI - SO HERE WE ARE (Liberation)
Following the release of her striking debut EP, Clever Disguise, and leading into a string of sold-out east coast tour dates, Gordi gives us her latest single ‘So Here We Are’. A heartbreaking lo-fi piano and vocoder-led lullaby, ‘So Here We Are’ is both the last cut from the EP and Gordi’s personal favourite from the package. The song was recently featured on Bob Boilen’s All Songs Considered on NPR (which syndicates to a network of 900 public radio stations in the US) and has popped up on numerous Apple and Spotify playlists, including Apple Music’s ‘Best Of’ list in May. The soon-to-be-released video was the result of a creative collaboration with Dreller (Thomas Rawle) and local producer-extraordinaire, PAXI.
CHEAP FAKES - DEEP SPACE (Independent)
“Deep Space” is a song that struts – a track from a confident band after gaining renown for raucous live performances at Woodford Folk Festival, Big Pineapple Festival, Island Vibe, Caloundra Music Festival and Golden Days as well as national support jaunts with Melbourne Ska Orchestra and Cody Chestnutt. Swirling and strident, “Deep Space” rings true with a slightly deeper vibe than perhaps initially expected; while the bands’ own inspirations still bubble forth, “Deep Space” doesn’t devolve into showboating, relying on an expert groove and simmering sustain to keep your ears hooked. “Deep Space” is released alongside the commencement of an east coast Australian tour, with Cheap Fakes collecting more notches on their already much scored belt. Not content with thrilling audiences in their home country, Cheap Fakes are also heading out for their second New Zealand tour after their much celebrated 2015 debut tour of the country.
THE BELLIGERENTS - CAROLINE (Independent)
Brisbane five-piece The Belligerents have released a new sprawling and psychedelic single “Caroline”, the second teaser from their long-awaited debut album, Science Fiction out in November. Fans right around Australia will be able to join in the celebration with an October tour right around Australia announced in support of "Caroline". “Caroline” sits right in the middle of the album. In their own words, it’s “a backwards sort of love song about a person that you know you're never going to be with”. But with TheBelligerents, this typical lover’s lament goes places. Beginning with jaunty pulsing organ, you’d peg it as a psychedelic strain of chamber pop—right before a chorus splits the whole thing open and leaves you in a technicolour pastoral wonderland. Just as you’re floating back down to earth, the last third kicks into a four-to-the-floor hippie freakout, theSummer of Love ‘67 and the Summer of Love ‘89 finally meeting in the rave tent at Woodstock. BOB EVANS - COLD COMFORT (EMI) Bob Evans returns with his next single “Cold Comfort” taken from his 5th studio album Car Boot Sale – out now This song started out as a country song but it morphed in to something different in the studio. There's a world of weariness that comes from giving so much of yourself away all the time and sometimes you just need a quick soothing hit of warm reassurance every now and again, any way you can get it. - Bob Evans. Bob Evans is touring all of August, supported by Melody Pool - head to http://www.bobevans.com.au/tour/ for more info TEETH & TONGUE - TURN, TURN, TURN (Remote Control) Teeth & Tongue are incredibly excited to share their latest single 'Turn, Turn, Turn' premiered via The FADER. The track comes the forthcoming album Give Up On Your Health out Friday 2 September through Dot Dash / Remote Control – with USA distribution by prestigious New York label Captured Tracks. "You’d probably never pick it now, but the first half of ‘Turn, Turn, Turn was actually written on an acoustic guitar. I wrote it while I was staying in very temporary digs in West Brunswick, subletting a couple’s bedroom while they spent a month in Europe. I was writing most of my songs on acoustic guitar at that time because I was moving around all the time and I didn’t have a studio, so that’s all I really had to write on. BORN JOY DEAD - SOURDOUGH (Independent) Hot out the oven, Brisbane's Born Joy Dead return today with 'Sourdough', a brand new single for daydreamers and brunch enthusiasts everywhere. There's no mucking about either, they'll take to Black Bear Lodge to launch this freshly baked tune in just under three weeks. A delicious, chewy 'F.U.' to the daily grind, 'Sourdough' is a unique result for the band who recently changed up their writing style, demoing together as a group for the first time. "The band is taking on a more organic songwriting method now and as a result it feels as though we've created something really special and more personal to us all," says front man (and former Hungry Kids of Hungary member) Ben Dalton. LISA MITCHELL - THE BOYS (RCA Records) Lisa Mitchell’s third studio album Warriors is out Oct 14, and features her new single The Boys. Opening track ‘The Boys’ details a sunny day Mitchell drove around Sydney in a car of male friends all mourning the passing of a mates’ dad. Over a bed of skittering percussion and a loping amble, the song is a literal account of the collective bonhomie in a coded situation. Setting up in Sydney’s Hercules Street Studios in Surry Hills, Eric J roped in drummer Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley, St. Vincent), bassist Rob Calder (Angus & Julia Stone/Passenger), and regular guitarist and collaborator, Tim Harvey (who also co-wrote with Mitchell in pre-production) for this song. BANKS - GEMINI FEED (EMI) The Altar is the sophomore album for Los Angeles based BANKS – set for release September 30 This is the follow up to her debut album GODDESS which was released in 2014 to critical acclaim & a top 20 ARIA chart. “Gemini Feed” was produced by SOHN and is the opening track on The Altar Again, BANKS writes and creatively controls every song on the new album, pushing her edges even further. It’s an inspiring confrontation of complicated love, longing, betrayal and self-doubt. BANKS will be in Australia in mid August for a promotional tour & showcase events.
