It’s been only a few months since Empire Within released their Debut EP ‘Submergence’ and the boys are back with an end of year gift; their newest single Taken. Premiered at this year’s Schema Festival, this standalone single is one of the band’s best. Coming a long way from their beginning in 2016, James Ring (vocals), Tim Molen (lead guitar), Lachy Lyne (Rhythm Guitar/ Clean Vocals), Luke Woods (Syth/ Sound Design), Sam Woods (Bass) and Dan Northcott (Drums) have joined forces to create Brisbane’s finest post-hardcore supergroup. And each release is only getting better.
Taken begins on a high, heavy guitars and a quick-paced drum beat paves the way for vocalist James to open the track with a guttural scream. The long musical build continues, featuring an almost alarm-sounding higher pitched guitar, adding to the overall anxious feeling that is already present in the track. Vocals quickly join, imitating the fast-pace of the instruments with its delivery. “Orchestrate the world that you harbour your truths in with creation of mind” James proudly states in the second half of the verse. “No place or time, just self-progression… I’m me and I’m fine”.
The song softens in the chorus as James sings “This is just me, a normal being. We breathe, we seek. This feeling of freedom taken from me”. The song almost takes a breath of fresh air at this point, before again progressing into much heavier territory throughout the second verse.
“You mean nothing to the system
You are nothing but your decisions
Do you feel worthy of life?
Do you feel worthy of pain?”
The song takes a much darker, more existential approach with these lyrics- battling the very core of humanity and self-observation. “I won’t be tamed by the false-hood the claim. No, I won’t be tamed by your falsehood”, ends the track, followed by another guttural scream and instrumental, much like the opening. This is as if Taken was designed to loop and end the way it started; forcing the listener to take in all the questions and observations posed in the song, and take a deeper look into themselves each time.
Taken is available on all streaming services.
